Hi. I have a 6-string Ibanez SDGR 506, and I have been very happy playing prog-rock with it for the last 3 years, but now that I moved to Spain and joined a funk(ish) band, I am not so happy with the sound I get. I've been trying some other basses and, eureka!, I found a G&L L-2000, at a very reasonable price (580 Euros). What I liked about it is that I can get rock, jazz, and funk sounds out of it (maybe even more), but I would have to trade in my Ibanez to get it, which saddens me... Advice?

There is no comparison in terms of feel & character. The Ibanez will feel like plastic after you've played the L2k for a month.

Your inner voice is telling you "Just do it". The L-2000 is often called "the Swiss Army knife of basses" and with good reason.

If it weren't for the fact that you've got a 506 (wenge and bubinga neck?), I'd agree with this. But the 500 series Soundgears have the best feel for the money. The G&L will be good to you, and the pickups are outta this world.

On the bright side, the SR506 is a cheaper bass, and can be easily re-acquired down the road if you decide you miss it.

Grab the G&L!!!! :bassist: :bassist: :bassist:

Playing the basses are all the push I ever need. It would be nice to keep them both ... but you really have to decide by direct comparison of the two specific instruments ... afraid the internet can't be much help. ;)

I had a SR905 and put it up for sale a few days after purchasing a used Tribute L2500. The Ibanez was, possibly, the most comfortable that I have ever played. Light, lovely neck, contoured body etc., but the G&L just rolled the Ibanez up and smoked it in terms of sound.

Two G&l's would be better than one G&L and one Ibanez. You will never go back. :smug:

Thank you all. I should have clarified this before (though you probably noticed by the price)... It is a Korean-made G&L. Does that make a big difference? Is it still a good change?

It's a socalled tribute, and I have one. It's really nice, much nicer than many of 'em new indonesian L2k's. Mine outplays most USA G&L's and every other bass I've tried to this day that doesn't cost 5 times as much...

Well I'd say 580,- EUR is not a bargain. Pretty much a standard price for a new Tribute L-2000 (http://www.musik-produktiv.de/g-l-tribute-l-2000-premium-3t-sunburst-rw.aspx). At least here in Germany.

trade the Ibanez.....it is much easier to replace than missing the chance at the G&L. IMO

Do it. I got myself a L2K a month or so ago, and I really love it. Extremely versatile and very good value for money. My next bass is going to be a L2500, and them a fretless L2000 or L2500.

AGAIN, THANK YOU ALL. I FINALLY DID IT. I ORDERED AN L2K, SUNBURST, AND I CAN'T WAIT FOR THAT NEW BABY TO ARRIVE HOME... IT CERTAINLY WILL FEEL AS 9 MONTHS.
The best part was, I didn't have to get rid of the Ibanez, I just had to work a few extra hours to be able to pay the G&L's whole price.

Hi everyone again. I just got the L2K today, and it is quite a beauty. The sound is unbelievable, and I can't wait to go to my band's practice room to try it out with proper sound (I use a little practice amp at home). I have a concern, though... The strings, with the setup it came with, "fret" (hit the frets, I don't know what you call this in English, in Spanish it's called "trastear"). I changed the setup to raise the strings a bit, far more than I'm used to, and as much as I can tolerate, and the problem was gone about 90%, but it's still there. Is this normal? Thanks again.

Are you saying that there is "fret buzz" (noise from strings against frets)? If so, you may need to get a good setup technician to look at the bass. It could be that just a little neck relief from the truss rod could be the answer, or a fret dressing should there be one or two frets that are higher than the others.

Basses shipped in the winter (or anytime, for that matter) sometimes take a few days to settle in. If it was shipped, you might want to wait a while before tweaking.

Any idea why that would be? Thanks for the input. By the way, it actually was shipped this winter, and the truck had to spend a day in an area blocked by snow, as it was entering northern Spain, so that COULD be the reason.

Thank you. "Fret buzz" is the term I was looing for.

I always assumed it had to do with changes in temperature, and maybe humidity too.

Play it for a few days then see if you can lower the action to a comfortable level. If so, great. If not, then you can tweak it. Also(you probably know this already), a lighter touch can help reduce fret buzz.

Great looking bass. I currently have two JB2s and would love to get an L2000.

Glad you didn't have to get rid of the Ibanez.

I have one as well and have been lucky enough to be able to keep every bass I've ever bought.

The SR506 I bought was the first brand new bass I ever bought and it was my main bass for a long, long time until I got a 2nd hand G&L L-5000. Now I know which one I prefer to play (the G&L) but it nice to know that my 6 is still there to go back to if I need that particular tone or extra string.

I love the G&L L-5000s so much that I now have two of them!

Take a look at your neck relief.....it may need a bit of turn on the truss rod, which should get rid of the "fretting out" problem. It should be a little concave when sighted from headstock to bridge, and you may even find that you can lower the strings again afterwords, and really speed up the neck. You have a great bass, and like all great machines, it should respond well to a tune-up....Dial it in, Dude !!
