what dyou all think of a black walnut neck with three maple stringers?

that combo (not in the same amounts, though) has been used by carvin and a lot of imports for years with great success. I like black walnut a lot ...and the smell is great! But it may very well be romanticism since the first thing I ever built out of wood was a small black walnut table for my wife to use while feeding our first born baby, so take it with a grain of salt ;)

Had a bass with a black walnut/maple neck. Very nice combo.

My main bass is maple/walnut and the two I am building are maple walnut , love it just love it. Walnut is the king. hard to find a tight grain stock though a lot of available stock is plainsawn wood cut close to sapwood so the growth rings are biggish for my liking, but still.

I vote YES to Maple Walnut necks, always

WALNUT IS KING !!! I totally agree. You have probably seen a BTB by Ibanez, Maple with Walnut stringers, but I prefer using Walnut as the main wood. I wasnt too sure if it was a good idea, stiffness and all that, im glad to read that there is no problem. Walnut is by far my favorite wood to work with, glues nice, works great and it smells wonderful !!! What do you think of an Ash fretboard then? to go with the walnut neck...

I actually never seen Ash fretboard I dont know if it is used for that purpose, Ash seems hard but has deep pores , I guess it can work you might have to fill the pores well and epoxi overtop.
I have no real experience with ash, it doesn't grow around here in BC West Coast.
If the main wood is Walnut and just maple stripes you could get some AAAAAA birdseye maple for a finger board too and make a little walnut inlay dots or squares, OOUH-AHH!!!
What are you doing for the body? I assume it is a neckthrough is it?

I would think that all of the finish prep work (like grain filling and sanding a fretted fretboard) for Ash would be a total pain

not something I can see using on any of my builds because of this ... and I'm sure I'm not alone

I think it could be pulled off quite nicely. It depends on the thickness of the pieces, the grain and any figuring, and the finish (if any).

I have a bunch of quartersawn Ash, really straight grained, I dont think id want to do it if it was flatsawn. I think I might go for it.

The plan is to build a bass out of pine, glue it with duct tape (hahahha) ok seriously, I am gonna build 1 or 2 basses out of pine to get the exact look of my bass, get my design straight, and once im satisfied Ill build a bunch of templates out of it and build four basses at the same time. kinda starting a little production. Im gettin a hell lot of Khaya Mahogany, Maple, and Black Walnut next week, so two of them are gonna be walnut and maple neck with walnut wings, possibly Ash or Maple fretboard, and the other two will be Maple and Mahogany, Perhaps Mahogany and Maple with Mahogany wings and Morado boards. all neck through, 5 string, my pups and my bridges. should be interesting. Is it possible Morado is also called bolivian rosewood or Pauferro?

If it is so called Bolivian Rosewood, it is a very pretty wood I like it a lot.
