I'm very curious as to what types of music fellow TBers are listening to these days, and since it's almost the end of 2007, I figured I might as well ask. Worst that could happen is that my topic gets deleted for being stupid. Anyway, let's see what your 10 favorite albums released this year are. Feel free to just list, or give a little explanation as to why you like the albums if you like.

I know some people here probably don't like much music today, but I'm sure quite a few of you here are like myself, getting into new music all the time.

1) Coheed & Cambria - Good Apollo I'm Burning Star IV Volume Two: No World For Tomorrow
2) Rosetta - Wake/Lift
3) Between The Buried And Me - Colors
4) Immanu El - They'll Come They Come
5) Kayne West -Graduation
6) Holy ****! - LP
7) The Dear Hunter - Act II The Meaning Of, And All Things Regarding Ms. Leading
8) The Chariot - The Fiancee
9) Kidcrash - Jokes
10) The Ocean - Precambrian

Apart from "Snakes and Arrows" by Rush and the "Art Metal Trio" record by Jonas Hellborg, I can't think of much that has come out this year!

Coheed and Cambria's new album is really the only thing I was looking forward to. I don't listen to many artists that are out in this day and age, and those I do I don't follow enough to get their album when it releases.

Actually, my list would be this:
1. Coheed and Cambria - Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, Volume II: No World For Tomorrow
2. The Julius Airwave - The City the Forest
3. They Might Be Giants - The Else

So yeah, I have to include a local band, who's CD I picked up at the release party. And They Might Be Giants is always good, I just didn't like the CD as much as some of their other works.

1. Chuck Brown - About the Business (Track 4 has a GREAT version of "Liberty City" - they have another bass player playing an R&B line under the solo - cool stuff)

2. Jill Scott's album

Unfortunately, all of the albums I've purchased this year have been used, or released prior to this year.

Queens Of The Stone Age-Era Vulgaris
OM-Pilgrimage
Radiohead-In Rainbows

Lots of good music here. I've heard most of these releases, but mark, did you really like the new Rilo Kiley? I thought it was one of the biggest letdowns this year. That and the new Shins, anyway. Now that I'm looking, Deluge of Sound, I was pretty dissapointed in the new OM too. I only listened to it 3 times though. So it might come around and make me a fan later.

i was glad ot see the rustic overtones put out another album

i also dug pharoah monches new album, kanye's new album some new radiohead stuff and tv on the radio....although i think that was form last year.

Since 10,000 Days was released, nothing of any real interest has come out....

...well snakes and arrows was a nice effort, but it really is just a novelty for us Rush fans that they continue to put out albums. It's not like they are putting out stuff like Hemispheres anymore.

A few people mentioned Coheed and Cambria...what's the deal there? The little I heard seemed blah...what am I missing?

I like Coheed's pop oriented rock, basically. I have fairly diversified tastes, and usually when I talk to people about my favorite albums this year, they also ask what I see in Coheed and Cambria. It's entertained me and been played in my iPod more than any other album this year basically. Catchy, simple prog rock with pop sensibility = win.

Off the top of my head:

The Horrors - Strange House
Pelican - City of Echos
Queens of the Stone Age - Era Vulgaris
Gogol Bordello - Super Taranta!
Soulsavers and Mark Lanegan - It's not how far you fall, it's the way you land

need to think more about the last five. The new High on Fire will probably make the list if their show next week is good!

It's High on Fire/Pelican co-headlining. Should be awesome - I'll try and borrow a camera. Doesn't Matt Pike take a tech from Soldano on the road because he blows so many amps?

Deluge Of Sound
12-05-2007, 08:57 PM
Dude, It wouldn't surprise me. The fact that you're seeing Pelican too just makes it worse... :crying:

But the fact remains that Matt Pike has one of the best guitar tones in metal today, and a large part of that is his volume.

If you can pretend that Pelican is only drumming, then it probably won't hurt as much that you won't be able to see them... but High on Fire should mean automatic go.

Well, I don't know what else to say then, lol. I love Pelican, but at times I just can't stand to listen to the horrible drumming. For 3 albums and however many EPs, you figure the guy would get a little better at timing and knowing where fills should go. Anyway, that sucks you missed OM. I didn't like the last album, as I've said previously, but Conference Of The Birds totally owned me when it came out.

You really think so? I love the drumming on the March into the Sea EP and it's never bothered me on the other records. Sure, he's no Brann Dailor but he does the job for me!

Herwig to me is always the opposite of what is called for. If it's light, he's going heavy. If it's fast, he's going slow. I just picture him randomly hitting drums in the studio, arms akimbo. I'm a big fan of Pelican, but I'd be a bigger fan if Herwig learned how to get along with their songs.

Their previous album, Menos El Orso (I think) is equally as good. If you liked Planet of Ice you'll like it!

I agree that it felt like a thin year, but maybe I was just too busy to hunt down the hidden treasures...

• Coheed and Cambria - Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, Volume II: No World For Tomorrow
• Fair to Midland - Fables From A Mayfly: What I Tell You Three Times Is True

Those are my two standouts from the year.

Well said young man, well said. Ruiner Severhead certainly has created something that every child in America should ask to be put in their X-Mas stockings!!!

Download THE FREE FREE FREE JESUS FIST TAPES (http://www.ruinerseverhead.com/jft/jesusfisttapes.html) and spill the blood of the blood ports of the INTERNET:

Ire Works - The Dillinger Escape Plan
The Jesus Fist Tapes - Ruiner Severhead
The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of Niggy Tardust - Saul Williams
Down III

Those are the only albums from 2007 that I bought/aquired in 2007. +1 to whoever said 2006 was better for music.

Just got They've Actually Gotten Worse Live, the new NoFX live album, and it definatly makes the 'Honorable Mentions' sections. Not a perfect live album, but its a great collection of NoFX songs into one place, its obvious they put on a hell of a show, and nothing is funnier than drunken banter. I love this version of 'Whoops, I OD'd.'

So, here's some thought:

What are you guys excited to see in '08? I know OK Go is doing a third album, which excites me. If they keep up this pattern... Self Titled= Good Pop album, Oh No= Great Pop Album, X= Amazing Pop Album...

Plus I know that The Forecast, Russian Circles, Bullet For My Valentine, The Mars Volta, and Coldplay all have albums due. I even heard a rumor that Blind Melon intends to Record and Release in '08?

I did like the new Minus The Bear, but anytime I listen to them or These Arms Are Snakes, the only thing that seems to go through my head is, "Wow, I really miss Botch..." Sometimes it just makes me want to wail piteously. Anyway, Botch = win, members new bands = fine, I guess.

top ten, hmm......

1. porcupine tree - fear of a blank planet
2. nine inch nails - year zero
3. radiohead - in rainbows
4. fair to midland - fables from a mayfly
5. queens of the stone age - era vulgaris
6. saul williams - the inevitable rise and liberation of niggy tardust
7. toupé - chat!
8. minus the bear - planet of ice
9. nine inch nails - y34rz3r0r3m1x3d
10. (tie) smashing pumpkins - zeitgeist / herbie hancock - river: the joni letters

For those of you who don't know what Toupé is, they're this little-known band out of England with two bass players and a drummer. One on a six-string, and one on a four string. It's funky, heavy, fun music. I'd definitely recommend it to the people on this forum.
