VIEW FULL LIVE VERSION : My Attempts at Electronica - Shio Ug

Nothing phenomenal just yet, I'm starting to take electronica a bit more serious. I'll probably do some collab stuff with a friend of mine. But when I make something I like, I'll toss it up here.
I've got too many "bands."
Barkless Dog 12-05-2007, 06:56 AM Not bad. Both songs I thought were pretty good.
Was the bass real bass or sampled?
Matt Till 12-05-2007, 05:02 PM Sampled. I have messed around with using real bass, I have a hard time making it fit the genre. Squarepusher I am not.
Benjamin Strange 12-05-2007, 05:33 PM Do you have a job, Matt? I'm always amazed at how much you're able to come up with in relatively short order.
Matt Till 12-05-2007, 05:41 PM The trick is to have a job... but not a life.
Matt Till 12-08-2007, 10:01 PM Two songs added to the profile since I first started it:
"First off Poor Kids Second"
and
"Donkey Basketball"
Click boop bawwwwnk.
Tired_Thumb 12-08-2007, 10:28 PM Napalm Life - Okay, but ditch the sawtooth waves, they sound too contrived.
Bicycle Repairman - Sounds the same as Napalm Life. Nice bass groove though.
First Off Poor Kids Second - Better. The sawtooth waves sound more like part of the atmosphere, and not just add-ons.
Donkey Basketball - The Nintendo noises, like the sawtooth waves before, sound too contrived.
Overall, good, but to me, it sounds too much like avant-garde noise trying to come off as electronica. Try to let the noises fit into the atmosphere, and not let them sound so contrived, probably what I'd do differently if I were doing it. You sound alot like you have an Underworld thing going though. You should check them out if you haven't already. You have a good thing going, so don't give it up!
Matt Till 12-08-2007, 11:20 PM I appreciate the notes for improvement, but is electronica suppose to follow a certain formula? The electronica I tend to listen to dances on the borderline of avant garde, and I tend to gravitate towards the weird/noisey side of music. I will of course note the critique for newer songs, but the review has me slightly confused. You say the sawtooth styled samples are too contrived, yet the music is avant garde? So it's by the book, but not by the book enough?
This is essentially my first attempts at taking the genre serious, so any advice is greatly appreciated, thanks.
P.S. Nintendo will be a big part of my style, and it is something I plan on attempting a lot, as it is a big influence on my electronica side. Maybe this isn't even electronica... I'm bad with genres.

Electronica is a broad brush, as broad as rock or jazz, so in that sense, one man's non-electronica is another man's perfect electronica. After more thought about this, really it sounds, like the music isn't sure what side of the fence it wants to be on, noise or ambient. Of course, music is music, and there's no rules saying that the music can't stay on the fence and look down at the poor souls sitting on either side, and perhaps create a new trend in the process.
Matt Till 12-09-2007, 05:54 PM That's a pretty accurate description of the music I do, I'm not sure if I tend to be more noise oriented or ambient. The same goes for my other project (VG Screens), it's certainly noisey, but most noise fans seem to go for harsher sounds. I am always (attempting) to create moods and evoke unnamed feelings moreso than just making noise, but I don't know what I'm doing really.
Anyways, I added a new song, it's called "Gas Tank Full of Blood and Puke."
