5 string how wide would you make the neck at the 24th fret? 70mm 75? Thanks. tom

Depends on scale length and string spacing at the nut. Give me those and I can crank out the spacing at #24.

Use fretfind to generate a drawing ...I've never measured spacing anywhere in the middle of the neck ...just use the diagram and f'gettabahtet.

neck width at the nut is 49mm I use the nut gauge from stewmac so the spacing varies. 34.5 scale. Thanks

You need to know the string separation at the nut. Assuming 12.25 mm (49/4) :
12.25 + (17-12.25)*3/4 = 15.813mm

hence the neck width would be 15.813*4 + 2*overhang
so with a overhang of 2.5 mm either side

width: ~68.3mm

I think you neglected the overhang @ nut here...

Edit: I also think a 2.5mm overhang is a little narrow. A 0.125" B string has a 3.125mm diameter, so you'd have a little less than 1mm from the edge of the string to the edge of the fingerboard.

You're right on both counts but it was meant as a how to work it out rather than this is the width of the neck at the 24th fret...
