VIEW FULL LIVE VERSION : Balkan funk for your pleasure
stockbass 12-06-2007, 03:44 AM Hi,
my friend recorded our last rehersal and put it out on youtube. It's recorded with a small camera, so the quality is not 100 percent. (Nor the playing...) Anyway, I thought that this might be interesting as it's a little different music for funk electric bass. I play mostly double bass and tuba - but think that electric bass is the best option in this setting.
Would love to hear your comments!

Vorago 12-06-2007, 04:04 AM Cool stuff, I have a accordeon at home, I should really learn how to play it, cool instrument.
BassmanDk 12-06-2007, 04:10 AM wow supernice playing. Great song too. Actually pretty good sound if just recorded with the camera mic except the constant "hot" signal. Next time turn the bass down i think. But good seperation between the instruments.
More!!!
perogato02 12-06-2007, 04:11 AM I like it a lot :) keep them flowing in
BuffaloBass 12-06-2007, 05:42 AM
Yeah, I dig it !!!! Somewhere between my all-American funk soul, and my Ukraininan/German immigrant's son genetics! SO it resonantes with me. Almost has a Flecktones" smell to it!
Thomas, nice work on the bass! :bassist: Great groove, I mean for a white man. ;) I jest. You have the pulse NAILED in that tune. Keep on FUNKIN' - doest it feel GREAT!
Vorago, wip out that squeezebox AND FUNK IT UP!!!!

Suddenly I have a craving for a stein of beer.
stockbass 12-07-2007, 01:32 AM Wow, thanks for the all the nice comments! I'll pass all the comments to the drummer and accordeon player.
One thing to share on a forum like this: when I'm out gigging this kind of music using playing electric bass there's always people telling me that they would much more prefer double bass. And those people often get quite provoked if I tell them that double bass and tuba are my main instruments. Sometimes I try to explain that electric is actually more in line with the tradition, or that it's simply better as you can play a more distinct disco or funk style. But that seldom works. I've learned that it's better just to let those comments pass...
I think that the electric bass, at least here in Sweden, is often viewed as a rock or pop instrument that should not be used in ethnic music.

BAH! Your head is exactly where it should be. Remember, we ONLY have to defer To Mother Music. No one elses opinion is really important.
stockbass 03-18-2008, 02:57 AM Friends and allies,
a new recording was made yesterday. I learned the tune minutes before we made the take, so it's some rough playing on my part. But the accordeonist and drummer are rock solid.

BuffaloBass 03-18-2008, 09:53 AM Less funk in that one (syncopation, micro time changes and cross talk), BUT its HOT! Very good work!

I actually know about that american band. I have a friend who lives in Brooklyn close to the club that has a lot of eastern music. Although I have not heard the full band live. I think that Slavic Soul Party a really good band. But if you like that type of music you should not miss the bands and musicians from Macedonia, Serbia, Bulgary etc.

JAUQO III-X 04-12-2008, 10:05 AM That was nice and the tone of the bass sounds very nice as well.
lambro 04-12-2008, 11:04 AM one of the best submissions to TB I have seen, great stuff all around
ps get your recording volume figured out, there s a bit of digital distortion happening
Matt Till 04-12-2008, 11:11 AM Well yeah, I'd love to hear a pro-recording of this stuff.
dude that Shopska is real nice!
great playing!
axisluminary 04-12-2008, 06:47 PM that was really cool, nice playing.
stockbass 06-02-2008, 09:33 AM Thanks everyone! First I want to apologize for the low technical quality of the videos. The videos are recorded with a small hand camera with a piece of scotch tape over the mic - to reduce the sound pressure and distorsion.
We've all been very busy lately, but we are trying to get together and record some songs in a real studio. I'll be bringing my new Sadowsky jazz bass ;). Plus we've hooked up with a great guitar player.
Take care
Tom
