the action on the lower notes of my neck is really small. too small. but the action higher on in the neck is higher. ive been playing with my bridge, which ahs now been set quite high, and ive been working on my truss rod to no succsess. could any one pointme in the right direction to get the action level on a staight neck please?
its a squier VM if that makes any difference

This is how I would diagnose:
- take off the strings
- adjust the truss rod to make the neck as straight as possible
- use a long ruler and lay it on the neck(doesn't have to be an expensive straight edge, but has to be at least 34" long ...one of those 48" long aluminum rulers available at home depot, etc works)
If the end that goes toward the bridge seems to get closer to the body as it approaches the bridge, then you may need to shim the neck to introduce a slight neck angle away from the playing surface (shim the pocket only in the area closest to the bridge).
If it seems to be straight and the ruler seems to be a constant distance from the body as it approaches the bridge then you may just need to lower your bridge saddles.
From your description it seems that it's either that you have too much relief, the saddles are too high or the neck needs to be shimmed.

cheers mate, i hadnt even thought about getting the neck shimmed. ive had a play with it over the past hour or so, and ive got the action and neck as good as i can get them. the action is ever so slightly raised once you pass the 12-15ish fret. but not as much a it was. i think i can live with it for now though cheers!
