VIEW FULL LIVE VERSION : HOW BIG A HAT CAN YOU GET AWAY WITH WITHOUT LOOKING LIKE A GOOBER?
Hey, its getting really cold outside, and this year I seem
to be feeling colder than ever. Since a lot of heat seems to be lost
from the balding spot on my head, I think I am gonna take up
wearing a hat when I play.
Question is, I don't want to look like a total goober. How big
a hat can i get away with?

need4mospd 12-06-2007, 04:29 PM Move to Texas. The hat size limit is somewhere in the 3-4ft diameter range.

BigSwami 12-07-2007, 02:15 PM I hate to say it, but bass players are famous for wearing hats to try to make themselves stand out. It makes us look like that horrible pimply kid in high school who wore a fedora because he thought it made him look cool. Or like that one horrible-smelling frat guy who wore the same Detroit Tigers cap through 4 straight years and 50 additional pounds of beer fat.
You need to wear a hat if you're an astronaut, a dirt farmer, or a football player. No one else needs a hat. Please remember this.
Hats don't make you cool. Your coolness makes you cool. You should only wear a hat to let some of your coolness rub off on the hat, not the other way around.
Valerus 12-07-2007, 02:18 PM I hate big hats.

I'm going to answer as if you were asking a serious question and say out of the choices you originally posted, one of these two.
By the way, if you're planning on getting a decent cowboy style hat don't forget to look at Resistol. They've been at it a long time and their edge finishing has been quite a bit higher than Stetson, who have been kind of cruising by on their name recognition for a very long time.
Try to get at least a 4x, but no need to go any higher than a 10x, unless you just want to spend the money.

CallieBum73 12-13-2007, 07:08 AM I think hats are sexy on men...if its the right hat....well the right guy....like Matthew (not even attempting spelling on the last name) in the stetson add.
A big AMEN to the post that says chicks dig long hair.......yep yep yep indeedy!!!!
Personally, Matthew looks a bit 'Brokeback' there with the
shaved chest and all. He made a movie around here,Amistad iirc; word on
the street was the guy was a total twit.

Bard2dbone 12-16-2007, 06:11 PM You should get a hat that fits your bodytype. If you are a tall guy, get a tall hat. If you are wide throught he shoulders, get a hat that is wide in the brim.
If you mix that up you will look dorky. Short guys with tall-crowned hats look dumb. Skinny guys with wide brims look dumb. But it's even worse if you're a big guy and the hat is too small. It could be the right size and all. But if your shoulders are wider than some doorways (like mine) and you wear a hat with a narrow brim, then you're a doek.
So no porkpie for Wayne. Which is a shame, because porkpir hats are cool, just not for me. Fedoras almost work, but are still generally too narrow because of my enormous round Charlie Brown head. About the only kinds that I can get away with are the kind of cowboy-ish hats with the lowered crown and a four inch brim. Or go completely the other way and get one with no visible brim from the front, like the Kangol things that Samuel L. Jackson wears all the time, just without that stupid kangaroo on them.

Hey! There's nothing stupid about the Kangaroo.
I just wish mine hadn't gotten washed and then dried in the drier. It barely fits my nine-year-old.

Bard2dbone 12-16-2007, 11:08 PM I'm just totally not a fan of giant Australian hopping rats on my forehead.
I've got a cheap hat shaped liked those from the WalledMarket of all places. It's horrifyingly 'me'.

Pilgrim 12-20-2007, 04:46 PM Hats really are cool. A basic fedora looks good on most guys - adds a touch of class. For outdoor summer gigs, I always wear a Panama hat. The brim and crown size are up to you, but there are combinations that look good on anyone.
