I had never even heard of these prior to yesterday. Previously, the thinnest I knew of was .5mm. Seems like a .38 would be like trying to pick with paper.... am I missing something?

They would more be for guitarists who need to 'shred' alot rather than bassists.

Holy cow!!!! I can't imagine using that thin a pick on bass, but that's just me. I love 2.0 mm Big Stubby's.

While reading about alternate picking I've found out that a lot of the "shredders" use heavy picks (3mm for example: http://www.theodoreziras.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=21) so I guess the thin pick is more useful for strumming.

I actually just found a .46mm in my collection, and it's just silly thin.

I've played guitar for 15 years (only started bass a couple weeks ago), and it's true that fast guys typically go with a thick pick, coz you don't have any snapping.

Haha.... I'm trying to figure out if you have any special technique with them. I've seen guys hold thin picks with their index and middle on one side, thumb on the other in between, so it curves the pick. It keeps the thin tonality, but makes it a bit stiffer.

Yes I do. I can slap, pluck, tap and pick while still holding my pick.

Here's a clip of some one asking me about my picking technique, after seeing me utilize in during a show the previous night.

I'm explaining the basic approach to my slapping, plucking and picking technique all rolled into one and I'm using a Dunlop nylon .38mm pick

I have a .18 blue triangle pick (measured it with a micrometer) I found on the pavement outside GC. No name on it and its about the thickness of a yellow post it. Never tried to use it.

I can get no dynamics out of a thin pick

I don't understand the ridiculously thick gauges either.

i get next to no flex out of a Jazz III

Hey Jauqo I myself also do that, didn't know of someone else doing it! But you do it better than me... Still, I'm just 14 so time's my friend!

In some parts of this clip I'm applying my hybrid picking technique.
