So what do I start studying . Currently I just do a regular modes practice i.e. playing a the notes of a key in every position , in every mode . Besides that I ear train , and figure out some Arctic monkeys songs , which I'm gonna get heavily looked down upon for I'm sure . In any case I need to start listening to , and doing stuff which is gonna be progressive to the genre is wish to eventually make music for , so what would you guys suggest ??:eyebrow:

buy some earth wind and fire records, herbie hancock headhunters records, and learn all the grooves and licks.

Funk-rock: Play some older Lenny Kravitz songs, "Long Train Running" by Doobie Brothers (been played to death, but anyway), and perhaps some RHCP etc etc etc

Funk-jazz: What Mark said. Also songs like "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" (e.g. Cannonball Adderley's version), "Street life" (Randy Crawford) and "Cut the cake" or something else by Average White Band. Perhaps check out some Steely Dan too, like "Green Earrings".

I'd also recommend just grooving along to relatively simple songs like "Move on up" by Curtis Mayfield. One of the most intense funk songs ever recorded, IMO.

This thread inspired me to put on the record "Street lady" by Donald Byrd. Pretty cool jazz/funk there, worth to be checked out too. :)

Seriously, check out the links in the " FUNK 101" thread. Its not " funk jazz, which I dont really know what that means, but play along with some of the classic FUNK tunes listed here. It will help your musicianship.
