DanielM 01-09-2008, 03:00 PM very nice design Scotty! and that wood combo is really wild. especially for a proto!
scottyd 03-02-2008, 07:50 PM I'm thinking really hard about only using a piezo in this bass.:hmm: Here's the body with the top,

cricketfever32 03-02-2008, 09:12 PM oh my god
sexy sexy sexy!
simply amazing spalt
keep the pics coming
T. B. Player 03-02-2008, 09:25 PM Scotty - this is just amazingly gorgeous - no chance in making it a 6 (:D)
Still have my neck-thru you designed for me on file - just can't get enough $$$ together. Picked up a KSD thinkin' it would work since it was available immediately, but turned out to be a 35 rather than a 34 (and the body is a bit large for my liking). If it sells (since I'm not playing a whole lot anymore), might be able to satisfy your jonesin' to build a neck-thru...

scottyd 03-17-2008, 09:36 AM I've got the neck shaping started, fingerboard glued on, headstock/scarf done, top coated in CA ect. The neck is very colorful to say the least:D

I've decided to use a single stacked humbucker and a piezo bridge for this bass.:D
Marcury 03-17-2008, 01:59 PM Wow, that neck is something!
Tslicebass 03-17-2008, 02:04 PM Very nice man... very nice:bassist:
DanielM 03-17-2008, 02:09 PM looking great. loving that fingerboard! the grain is really wild (reminds me of the Mac on my fretless! in terms of wavy-ness) and I really like the end of the fingerboard too. I'm just not too keen on the top... (sorry guys not a huge Spalt fan that's all)
eleonn 03-17-2008, 07:30 PM I love spalt maple but I have to say this time that I really (and I mean REALLY) prefer much more the look of that back!!! Too back there is a knot (at least it looks like a knot) right in the middle of the low side.

What?? you dont like the TONE knot?:p
SDB Guitars 03-18-2008, 02:34 PM What?? you dont like the TONE knot?:p
I perceive an entirely new line of marketing coming... it started with Mid-Hump®, progressed to Tranny Block™, and now we shall have the Tone Knot®™(pat. pending)*... if you don't have one, you don't have TONE!
*(not to be confused with the Tone NOT, which sucks all the tone out of a bass).
:hiding:
Al Heeley 03-18-2008, 03:48 PM My word, that is gorgeous, the fingerboard is out-of-this-world!
wilser 03-18-2008, 04:18 PM beeoooteefool.

Just wonder what would be the effect to the Mid-Hump® of a Tone Knot®™ right in the Tranny Block™ :p
Phil Mailloux 03-18-2008, 06:23 PM That bass is so hot! How come I never looked at that thread before?
scottyd 03-18-2008, 09:14 PM Thanks guys!

An overwealming amount of tone Eleonn.... I just don't think the world is ready for that.
that is amazing, i wish i had the tools and area to do projects like this (and the skill to make them look this good)
Rudyboy98 03-18-2008, 10:56 PM I may keep this one around for a prototype. Basically its being built from scraps that I've got laying around.

Very nice Scotty! You are making fine use of that padauk.

Thanks Erik, the top came off ebay
Nice color combo and design, I'll keep an eye out for the finished bass.
UncleBalsamic 03-19-2008, 01:26 PM That is some great wood you've got there, it looks great.
scottyd 04-12-2008, 04:38 PM A little bit of progress on this one. I've got the neck shaped and set with a curly rock maple tranny/heel. The carving is started, finger board radius to 7" (tired forearms!)
While routing the neck pocket I got some terrible tear out on the top (spalt will do that:scowl:) which forced me to set the neck off of center slightly. Any other time this would be pretty dang devastating to me but its ok being that this is a prototype. Another lesson learned!:D
I've decided on a stacked humbucker in the neck position and a piezo bridge. David from Audere is hooking me up with a modified Audere Classic that will buffer and mix the piezo with the stacked bucker. I bought one of those eBay piezo bridges everyone keeps asking about. Its very solid built, has a nice adjustment range, and is solid brass, well worth the money so far. We'll have to wait to see how it sounds!;)

wilser 04-12-2008, 04:50 PM gorgeous.
Jonsbasses 04-12-2008, 05:15 PM I thought David didn't do custom work / mods? I'm about to wire an Audere 4-band pre-amp with a piezo and magnetic config. Still trying to figure that one out.

It may only be something he only offers to OEM Luthier customers, or maybe its experimental I didn't ask. I'm just extremely happy he was willing give it a shot.:D
From what I understand the preamp will be a classic 4 band with one high impedance input and one normal. David did state that this mod can't be done after the preamp is finished that it has to be done while being built. So I'm guessing the capacitor value for the one line will be either left out or changed.:hmm:
If your using an already completed preamp you may still have to add a buffer to the Piezo to get the proper signal. A nice buffer is the Fishman powerchip, it’s set up to blend, is 9 volt and stacked on a pot which makes for a nice compact unit.
You could always try to build a buffer. I've dabbled in building my own preamps for a while but have not been able to build anything near as compact or pleasing as what is offered from Audere and some of the others. However building a small Piezo buffer would be fairly simple.
Good luck!:bassist:
D.Don 04-12-2008, 06:48 PM Subscribed, these redeemers are really nice creatures dude!!

scottyd 04-13-2008, 04:07 PM I've decided on a stacked humbucker in the neck position and a piezo bridge. I bought one of those eBay piezo bridges everyone keeps asking about. rollno: Well the eBay bridge is out of the question. I asked for 17mm spacing but ended up getting 18.5mm. I didn't notice it until I mounted it. It fits, but does not leave enough outer edge on the B and G strings. Guess I'll put it on the shelf for later use. I did however wire it into my Guitar Port to see how it sounded, it was actually pretty decent. I’m looking forward to using it with the Audere on a future build.
This turns out to be a good thing, because now I've decided to go with a single coil in neck, stacked bucker in bridge and build my own bridge out of cocobolo. Like I said in the first post, going with the flow :D
SDB Guitars 04-14-2008, 10:32 PM Maybe use the piezo saddles with your wooden bridge?
Just a thought... :)

and then wilser says beeooteeful! what is it about this thread that has all our greatly respected luthiers gibering? great build scottyd!:bassist::bassist::bassist:
waseok 06-14-2008, 07:05 AM Sorry but this is the BEST body shape of TB luthiers :D
IMHO
scottyd 07-06-2008, 03:42 PM I finally got a little bit of time to get the ball rolling on this one again!:hyper: I spent the day getting a bridge and pup covers built. I also built the bobbins. It'll have 2 single coils, I'm still trying to decide if i want to run them to a Bart TCT that I've had put up for a while.:hmm:
The bridge is cocobolo and spalted maple, the pup covers are spalted maple and poplar. Here is a shot of them roughed out.:D

rusty 07-07-2008, 03:59 AM Wow. Just wow.
Worshiper 07-07-2008, 07:00 AM I am loving that bridge...
eleonn 07-07-2008, 09:14 AM Scott I'm curious about the saddles. Are you going to make them T2Ws way?
scottyd 07-07-2008, 09:51 AM Scott I'm curious about the saddles. Are you going to make them T2Ws way?
I'm having a hard time finding the saddles that I've used in the past. So I may have to build them.:(
scottyd 07-11-2008, 11:18 AM The bass has the pup cavitys routed and it's finish sanded and coated with sealor. The spalt is like a sponge, it took several coats to get the top sealed. Now on to the grain filling.

Rudyboy98 07-13-2008, 01:07 AM Awesome looking bass Scotty!
