VIEW FULL LIVE VERSION : Best way to take off a neck....
sleepy_monkey 01-08-2008, 01:59 PM The bolts appear to have been broken off or something...all 4 of them. I can post a pic if it will help...I will have to take it tonight.
Any ideas? :crying:
Edit: Neck is bolt on obviously....4 bolts...6 string neck....not sure if that matters.
unclekebm 01-08-2008, 02:50 PM where are the screws broke?
a picture would help...
sleepy_monkey 01-08-2008, 03:28 PM I will get one up as soon as I get home. I have no idea how all 4 of them could have been broken but maybe I am missing something.
pics up in a few hours!
vinny 01-08-2008, 03:40 PM Maybe I've misunderstood, but if they're all broken shouldn't the neck come right off?
sleepy_monkey 01-08-2008, 03:45 PM Well they are still threaded I think...and I have no idea how to get them out.
sleepy_monkey 01-08-2008, 07:20 PM Ok, what do you guys think? I am having to scrape all of the paint off with a screwdriver too....which is a tedious process.
Here is a pic.

Lalabadie 01-08-2008, 07:26 PM Uhm these seem pretty screwed up (no pun intended). However this summer I used a couple of times a set of drill bits that are meant to dig in metal rotating counter-clockwise, to grab in stripped screws and allow to unscrew them with minimal damage to the surroundings. I think they're just called screw extractors. The tiniest one might be able to dig in the shaft.
Or maybe I just don't know these screws.
dman_113 01-08-2008, 07:27 PM It looks like the body has inserts, you could drill out the old screws and inserts and replace with new hardware.
sleepy_monkey 01-08-2008, 07:32 PM Yeah, I was thinking I would have to drill in them somehow and extract them....aaarghhh...not an easy task. Plus I don't want to mess the neck up.

+1
Or just put the bass out of its misery.
bassteban 01-08-2008, 07:42 PM Screw extractors is what you need. Take the whole hunk into a good hardware store & they should be able to hook you up.
sleepy_monkey 01-08-2008, 07:47 PM Cool, thanks. I would put it out of it's misery but I just got it as a project and the wood looks very nice after sanding and scraping paint off.
sleepy_monkey 01-09-2008, 11:44 AM So this should have what I would need?

Lalabadie 01-09-2008, 12:30 PM Those are the exact ones I used. You might need to drill a little the shaft for the screw extractor to bite in properly, due to the flat end.

So just use one of the drill bits supplied, drill down the middle, and then use the extractor? Hopefully this will be easier than I am thinking...but I doubt it will be...haha.
WarriorJoe7 01-09-2008, 12:40 PM let us know how it goes...
Jeff Martinez 01-09-2008, 12:48 PM This was the first thing that came to mind whan I read the title...

Seriously, the screw extractors should do the trick. Good luck.
sleepy_monkey 01-09-2008, 01:33 PM Thanks for the um....motivation? ;-)
Should I do this with a drill press? My dad has one. Man this is turning into a pain in my bass.
jonno1707 01-09-2008, 02:32 PM I dont think it's inserts what it looks like to me is somebody broke off the entire neck plate which on turn broke off the tops of the screws and left the broken pieces of whats left of the plate in the holes...
Screw extractors....

Dangit. You got to it before I could.

Relax, it's not difficult. Just think about what you're doing when you're doing it and go slow. It's probably easier to drill the starting hole on the drill press, but make sure the body is secure and the drill bit doesn't break. I use a hand drill when extracting screws. When you begin to extract them, do so slowly to ensure the extractor stays gripped into the screw hole. If worse comes to worse, you have the option of drilling the screws out anyway.
sleepy_monkey 01-09-2008, 03:26 PM Thanks for the info guys! I guess it was a neck plate that broke off somehow and that is the remnants.
I went to Lowe's and they didn't have the extractor set they had online....so I will order it and continue to strip the paint off.....or scrape it off with a screwdriver...there are 2 finishes of paint and a layer or varnish or something and when I tried to sand it off....it all glopped up......
Projects....sigh.
