i might buy one of those starter kit basses off of a friend. what i want to do is refret it to a microtonal scale.
now i've posted plenty of stuff in this forum about microtonal fretting, but now i think i have a solution to my problems. the scale yields many 'fretlets,' or partial frets. instead of cutting out small pieces of frets to exact lengths and then spacing them correctly, mr johnson of mr johnson's extremely strange musical instrument company recommended that i could put in a regular fret, and then grind down the part (with a dremel) that would be the space between the fretlets.
so i'd like to do that with this bass but i really dont want to wrestle off a fingerboard and cut a new one to fit (not something i'm set up to do). so is it possible to fret a neck, rather than a seperate fingerboard? i thought maybe i could tape it to a 2x4 and then run that thru a miter box to get a straight cut. and how about filling in the original fret slots? if a standard slot is .23", do u fill it with .24" or .22" slats? and is it ok to fret over the slats? do they need to be expoxied in? ugh so much confusion...
