Who's the bass player? palm grease 01-14-2008, 12:41 PM tom kennedy....yep....funky! a mid western guy iirc. middlebit 01-14-2008, 12:52 PM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27798KKiaMs&feature=related Wicked groove. Who's the bass player? If you click the "more" link on the right, the poster of the video writes: "Kick ass classic song played by my idol and his his band! Check out the cool Tom Kennedy bass solo!" No mystery there. morf 01-14-2008, 12:57 PM Yeap. He should turn up though. GlassJaw 01-14-2008, 03:38 PM All amazingly technical players but this did nothing for me. Weckl can't funk if his life depended on it. Bass player had insane chops and he'd played really fast but I felt nothing from his solo. I just can't listen to "chops" super-groups anymore. flipper_gv 01-14-2008, 06:07 PM I dig the tone, REALLY BAD CapnSev 01-14-2008, 06:18 PM Great take on a Jaco tune, and the bass tone was awesome! I just don't know about Dave Weckl... morf 01-14-2008, 06:50 PM LOL. Weckl can't funk??? hahahaha hansC 01-14-2008, 08:42 PM I think I'd let him play in my band;) Valerus 01-14-2008, 08:48 PM Nice! Wasim 01-14-2008, 08:58 PM All amazingly technical players but this did nothing for me. Weckl can't funk if his life depended on it. Bass player had insane chops and he'd played really fast but I felt nothing from his solo. I just can't listen to "chops" super-groups anymore. Exactly how I feel. You can't fault the playing, technically, but at times it's just a blur. I'm sure some people, especially musicians, can enjoy that sort of thing, but I didn't find it very appealing to the ears, or the way I perceive 'funk'. Plus I've never liked that sort of tone, which is one of the reasons I never completely 'got' Jaco. Dave Muscato 01-14-2008, 09:07 PM I didn't think that was bad. Sounded great to me, not a blur at all. Ya'lls need to get yur hearin' checked! Bassist4Life 01-14-2008, 09:10 PM I was just listening to this over dinner last night. Nice! Joe Wasim 01-14-2008, 09:20 PM I didn't think that was bad. Sounded great to me, not a blur at all. Ya'lls need to get yur hearin' checked! My hearing's fine, I just don't like all the same things as you! the_fooj 01-14-2008, 09:21 PM One of my all time favorite jazz tunes, acutally the first jazz song I learned I think. Thanks for posting this. I agree, the bass solo did lack some feeling, but I'd rather take his playing over mine any day (his tone too). Mark Wilson 01-14-2008, 09:31 PM That's the edited video. The real video has a build up to the wankfest on bass. Quite musical, actually. Mark Wilson 01-14-2008, 09:34 PM Found it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wIvr1AyHScY&mode=related&search= svenbass 01-14-2008, 09:38 PM Great take on a Jaco tune 'The Chicken' is a Pee Wee Ellis composition. :) Dave Muscato 01-14-2008, 09:39 PM Thanks for posting, Mark. axisluminary 01-18-2008, 09:16 PM ehh... that was kind of funky, definitely more of that "music for musicians". not nearly funky enough to compete with this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tb8L8lH030A. the clothes alone put weckl's sense of funk to shame. they do kind of rush through the song though, but cocaine will do it to you. Uncle Ernie 01-18-2008, 09:34 PM ehh... that was kind of funky, definitely more of that "music for musicians". not nearly funky enough to compete with this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tb8L8lH030A. the clothes alone put weckl's sense of funk to shame. they do kind of rush through the song though, but cocaine will do it to you. Man, it would take me about half a song to bump the amps off that stage! DWBass 01-18-2008, 09:49 PM ehh... that was kind of funky, definitely more of that "music for musicians". not nearly funky enough to compete with this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tb8L8lH030A. the clothes alone put weckl's sense of funk to shame. they do kind of rush through the song though, but cocaine will do it to you.First of all, they didn't play it as a Funk tune but as a Funky Fusion tune and anyone who thinks Dave Weckl can't play funk needs to listen to all his works and not judge him on limited listening. axisluminary 01-18-2008, 10:35 PM First of all, they didn't play it as a Funk tune but as a Funky Fusion tune and anyone who thinks Dave Weckl can't play funk needs to listen to all his works and not judge him on limited listening. well hey, c'mon now, i didn't say that dave weckl can't play funk. matter of fact, i really like a lot of what i've heard from him and enjoy watching him play. but, i didn't think that what he played in the video, posted in this thread labelled "too funky to not share", was particularly funky. also, whether it's a funky fusion or not is irrelevant to my point, because it wasn't denoted as such when posted. Christopher 01-18-2008, 10:39 PM Weckl's playing is super-busy, but I like it and admire the virtuosity. He's just not an "empty space" kind of guy. ras1983 01-18-2008, 10:44 PM Clearly every one of those players is a monster musician. And I agree with the sentiments of DWBass, this is more of a fusion feel than a funk feel. I have no doubt in my mind that those musicians could get seriously funky if they chose to do so. colorblindbass 01-18-2008, 10:45 PM But you know, This is nothing compared to this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJfiYdQcQtc Imo of course. chuck stardust 01-18-2008, 11:01 PM Whoooaa! Thats all cool and funk NASTY! I dig the chick on the end with the lace up suit! My favorite part is the leg lift. Gotta love ol James. And about the Chicken song....AWESOME player! Wish I could boogie like that! Chuck melt 01-19-2008, 01:26 PM The James Brown wins hands down for me, by such a margin that it's immeasurable (and I'm sure Jaco would agree as he loved JB). The Jaco clip is nice, but the Weckl clip leaves me cold too. Don't like the bass sound (too polite & weedy for me) and the solo....oh dear. It's not that I don't like fast (I do when it's done well), but please...focus!!! I've really gone off most fusion playing over the past year. I still love Stanley, and I really like Matt Garrison and Janek Gwizdala, but beyond that for some reason it now leaves me cold, whereas I used to be a big fusion fan. It may be something to do with the last Bass Day UK where every punter who turned up had exactly the same sound and played exactly the same way. I had to leave early because it gave me a headache!!! |
