I have these pickups installed in an MIA Jazz and find that they seem to have lower output than what they replaced, and the stock MIM pickups in my other Jazz. They also seem to have less low end.

Has anyone else noticed the same thing??

Also I find when I roll my tone off, the tone doesn't really get darker, or more bassy, but it's more like it gets weaker and sounds more like I'm playing through a phone.

Is this really how they're supposed to sound, or did my tech muff the wiring job???

Thanks in advance for all response.

Sounds like they might have been wired out of phase.

Sounds like they might have been wired out of phase.

That may be possible, but wouldn't the side efects be more so obvious than what I've described??

I have taken the pickguard, and control plate of to look at the wiring job, and to me it does seem messy, and it also looks like there's more wires running around than their should be.

I wasn't very impressed with the work done by the tech that did the job to be honest. The same guy was supposed to sheild the bass when he had it and all he did was put foil tape on the underside of the pickguard. He also put the grounding strip on the neck pickup and then cut it off so that it wouldn't stick out from underneath the pickguard. :rollno:

I'm not handy/experienced enough to redo the job myself, but my search to find someone capable of the task locally has proven fruitless.

Those pickups should rock, I had them in two MIM jazzes over the years and it made those basses sound as good as a USA Jazz. Make sure they are wired correctly like the 2nd poster stated and also have your guy change the tone capacitory to a vintage cap, I think they are 47mf. (I think)

They are wound to be bright and even, not necessarily high output or fat. Thats how 60's pickups were ... the tone knob issue is odd, but I'm guessing they had a non-vintage-spec capacitor in the MIM and it is reacting in strange ways to the likely lower impedance of the CS pickups. A capacitor swap should do the trick there.

The CS 60's are actually in a MIA Jazz, that I converted to stack knob with the kit from www.basspartsresource.com.

The Tone capacitor's are rated the same, but are not th elittle orange drop capacitors, but big honkin' orange caps.

When I have the ime and money, I'm gonna look for someone a little more knowledgable to rewire the whole bass.

The stack knob kit is set up with 250k volume pots, and 500k tone pots. I'll probably have them replaced with 250k/250k concentrics when I get the work done. Hopefully that will help abit.

that may help, I have never liked the sound of true single coils with 500K pots.

That's not how Fender advertises them. I would not have bought them if they were described as such.

I took the control panel off the MIM this morning and took a look at the wiring. It's definately all stock, and wired the same as the stock MIA panel, only with chepaer split shaft pots. I has the same tone capacitor as the stock MIA.

I'm starting to think that the CS60's are not for me.

Never trust a manufacturer .... trust TB!

There are so many great J-bass pickups out there ... there's one for everybody's taste. And there are lots of threads here about them if you search. I'd get those CSs out of there, list them here or on eBay, and try another set.

Also, I think the stock MIA pickups are quite good for rock tones.

first things first: I HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT ANYTHING: COMPLETE IGNORANT (BTW , we need a forrest-gumb-looking-smiley)

ok, now, i have a mim jazz, i upgraded long ago with a 3d bridge and a set of 60¨s custom after the famous bass player jazz bass pickups article/comparation...

im more than happy with them... its not jas more trebble or fatness in them... its "clearer"... "fuller"... some how more hi-fi out put.
i love the tone... in fact i just slightly bosst lower mids... anyother eq seems to make sound worst... so i just let them have their sound. my tone pot works fine... i can hear how tone changes when bothh are at same volume... just happy.

so maybe you got a waird set--- or the tec leaved a not strong soldering point some where... or something...
