I've started making endpins for double bass.

These are what I call "bottoming out" endpins. When you install them they bottom out at whatever height you normally would set your endpin. I custom make them to whatever height you normally play. And make them with either 1/2 inch (~12-13mm) or 3/8 inch (~10mm).

I offer them in all stainless steel or hand crafted exotic hardwood with stainless.

I also offer some crazy designs that some here will love and some will HATE!!!

They can be seen here:

Here's a couple recent pins.

One is for Louis F a member on this board, it is Honduran Rosewood.

The others are flamed maple, and stainless steel w/ dice for John H in Dallas

Thanks, Johnny (mine's the rosewood one). Fits the new Eberle carved bass like a glove, is rock solid, and VERY handsome! (and the endpin stopper holds like a tank)

Is there a spike under the crutch tip on these? If so, what's the difference in height with and without the stopper?

I have 3, none of the have a spike. The difference on mine is about 1/4" but underneath, it's just wood.

I had Johnny do a second one for me for my 5/8ths Rumano Solano 5 string. The length of the pin is 10 1/2" long, maple dyed black w/ a clear lacquer finish. The lacquer will mellow w/ age, and lose some of it's lustre naturally taking on the appearance of ebony after a few months. The pin has a stainless steel rod (although Johnny is now recommending aluminum, I went with steel because of the length)

The endpin looks great, is rock solid and has made the bass feel much more secure as I play it. I'll post pics later, but you can see it on his U-tube site.

Excellent work!

He just did one for my EC1, turned out awesome! He is very good at matching colors, and getting the color you want right. Here's mine:

These pins are very stout, look super nice, and are custom made. No two are alike! The perfect finishing touch, made by hand, and they can't "slip" and let your bass fall down while you're playing!

I love it.

What's the average price for one of these endpins? I've been thinking of it for a while, as my endpin's vibrating inside my bass' body, and a wood one looks like it would be have more stability.

You should PM Johnny on price. It all varies on what kind of wood, options, etc. They are very reasonably priced. I absolutely love mine - no more rattles either.

*side note - it is my personal opinion (and has also been discussed on this forum in the past) that ditching the heavy metal endpin rod, and putting on a much lighter wooden endpin can really "wake up" the sound of a bass, tone and volume-wise. It did for mine. YMMV.

I recently bought a Johnny Atomic endpin and I am very happy with all aspects of the transaction. It works great, solves the problem of slipping and worn out thumb screws etc.
John is easy to deal with and delivered all that he promised. I would definitely recommend his product.

I just had Johnny do another endpin for me , my third - a short stub of an endpin for my de Anda (ex-Gary Karr), Mexican bass. Johnny matched the color and elegance of the wood perfectly.

The little pin is rock solid, yet light enough that it helps open the bass and make it sing. Really nice work.

Highly recommend him!!

Please tell me, is the end pin at some point solid wood, or does the steel rod run all the way through the wood?

Thanks

If you're asking me, I assume the metal shaft goes about/at least halfway through the center of the wood. But Johnny would know for sure.
