I'm in a rather noisy environment at the moment (cube-city, low walls, idle chatter, gossip, most annoying...) - so, I reach for the headphones, and...

Well, not at this exact moment, but in my CD player the Lynne Arriale Trio Live at Montreaux is getting heavy rotation.

Telepathic, intelligent yet energetic trio work with very tasty bass lines and solos by Jay Anderson. Steve Davis on tubs.

I've just been listening to a new 6-CD boxed set I got of Olivier Messiaen's Organ music played by Jennifer Bate, under the supervision of the composer.
Wonderful sound and acoustic - great reverb! I just listened to the CD that contains "The Ascension" and "The Bodies in Glory", recorded in St. Pierre de Beauvais Cathedral.

.... I'm listening to John Patitucci's (& Chick Corea's) "Baja Bajo" with Chick Corea, Dave Whitham, John Beasley, & Vinnie Colaiuta, off of John's "John Patitucci" CD (1988 GRP). Truly inspirational! The interplay between musicians is awe inspiring.

Two nice new Criss Cross releases. "New Yourk Trio" with Dutch pianist Peter Beets, Rodney Whitaker on bass, and Willie Jones III. Great recording. "One For All Live at Smoke's" is some very nice playing as well.

I got the John Hicks tribute to Sonny Clark disc this weekend and it is really good stuff too.

Earlier this afternoon, while rewiring my mixing desk, I got 1 1/2 times through Ed Fuqua's You Don't Know Where One Is. This disc - featuring our own FUQHORN in combination with a bevy of various matriarchal fornicationists from the Big Apple - is great fun and boasts a killer version of "Alone Together".

Not only could I not figure out where "One" was, I couldn't find a single beat until the fourth tune. Mr. PUKESPRAY has really outdone himself this time.

Well, I just got home from Trumpet's, where Vic Juris was just tearing up the place. His quartet was Mark Soskin, piano,a drummer from Italy, last name Valentino, and the astonishing Brazilian bassist, Nilson Matta. And Vic's wife, Kate Baker, is one groovy vocalist. Matta's time sense is breathtaking; if you look up 'underrated' in the dictionary, you'll see his picture.

Now my dog's favourites !

This is not a joke.

The other day, I was listening to Vaughan Williams' Tuba Concerto and my dog (a one year-old boxer),
sitting in the living, wasn't paying attention.
He's very receptive to music but normally doesn't
listen the same way I do !

Then came 3d movement of the Tuba Concerto
and he started to follow intensively the music !

The following day I tryed Shostakovitch and got the same reaction from him with the Concerto for piano, trumpet and strings.

Now I'll iniciate him with Stravinsky, sure he will love it.

Today is One For All - "Live at Smoke's".
Sheesh, Peter Washington just kills me. To be honest, his live sound is not as good (acoustic) as I would hope, but you can hear everything, and his lines are so subtle they just efficiently do the job. Eric Alexander, Jim Rotundi, David Hazeltine, et al; what's not to love?!?

Anyone in NYC know what he uses live? Sounds kind of like a Realist going direct.

Very nice, Lerm. It sounds like we're on the same page lately, listening-wise.

A few that I've recently picked up and really enjoyed:
* MMW's Uninvisible - their newest is very nice - TONS of very tasty grooves by Chris Wood.
* Clay's Electronic Cowboy - local Dallas band fronted by former David Garza and Jackopierce bassist Clay Pendergrass. Even if it wasn't packed with friends playing on it, I would still find it quite the rump-shaker. Clay Pendergrass is a freakin' amazing player - Brad Houser's prized pupils can't be that bad...
* Debussy - random piano works. I'm a sucker for his stuff.
* Prokofiev - random piano works. One of the greatest musical smarta$$es ever.

Wow! Quite a difference from a similar thread on a different Bass Forum from a few weeks ago.

"Skip, Hop, and Wobble" - Edgar Meyers bass

"When skies are gray..." Ron Carter (new CD for me)

"Message from Home" - Pharoah Sanders (Charbett Moffett & Steve Neil on basses)

"Round Island" - Mark Cosgrove (guitar, flat picker)
with Larry Cohen on Bass

"Motown - the classic years" and "Standing in the Showdows of Motown" for Jamerson's "I heard it through the grapevine" bass line, which I am trying to learn.

"The Harder They Come" Jimmy Cliff

Listened to Primus, The Charlie Hunter Trio, Kenny Wayne Shepard and Sauage for Les Claypool's bass on CDNOW's track samples. Not a Primus fan.

my favorite bass hero right now is SCOTT COLLEY. i keep his stuff as a leader, in heavy rotation allways. "SUBLIMINAL" "THE MAGIC LINE" "PORTABLE UNIVERSE" "THIS PLACE" are all great. a new one came out on palmetto just this month.
to my ears, this guy has the delibriteness and intonation of charlie haden plus great chops.
the other two discs i've been listening alot are "WORKS FOR ME" john scofield w/ christian mcbride and "JAZZ CHILD" by shiela jordan w/ dave finck on bass. i had never heard of this guy before. shows ya what i know. this guy is a heck of a player.

I FINALLY got around to buying "Whims of Chambers" after enjoying Paul Chambers as a sideman on countless recordings.

His ideas and ability to propel the ensemble are great as usual, but does anyone notice that his tone is not as pretty here as on other recordings? Seems a bit unfocused compared to his tone on a Red Garland Trio CD I played side by side. Maybe this is Van Gelder trying to bring the leader out front or something.

On the way back from Lexington, I listened to an old friend in the car: Chick Corea's "Three Quartets". I've always loved this disc. I don't care for Gomez' tone at all, but his playing fits what's going on perfectly. I think these compositions really hold up well after all this time.

Waldron's "Status Seeking" is an awesome tune. I need to get my arranging chops up so I could get my combo to play it--although, since we have a similar lineup in terms of pitch range, we could do it. (We have two altoists, a baritonist, and rhythm; the original recording has Eric Dolphy, Booker Ervin on "high" tenor, and Ron Carter on cello, plus rhythm.)

Yah! I had the pleasure of seeing that group -- Chick, MBrecker, Gomez, Gadd -- perform those little ditties at Symphony Hall in Boston. For the second set, the band backed up Dizzy. It was one of those experience that makes you say, "Guess I'll play jazz 'til I stop breathing."

One of the things I love about the record is that it shows so powerfully that joy in music can overcome idiosyncratic tone and inconsistent intonation.

Nice chart, indeed. The chart in question is called "DONOSAUR DANCES", and it bears no resemblance whatsoever to Barney.

Since I'm here, I might as well add that I've spent the last couple of evenings practicing along with Lynne Arriale's "Melody" CD, which has been once of my favorites since it came out. I use my mixing board EQ to remove Scott Colley (only so I don't pale by comparison) and try to soak up the vibe of filling the space he filled on that record. That is one of the most elegant recordings I've ever heard. More so with Scott's playing than with mine, of course....

This was the very record I ever bought, musta been 1972-73. Hank Mobley takes no prisoners -- I've never heard him play better than on this record. PC, on the other hand is "on pins and needles" if ya catch my drift. It took me years to realize that instead of playing deep abstract chordal explorations, he was really lost on a Bb blues.

I was looking through my collection, and came across "Before I Close My Eyes" (Jon Raney Trio) - long time since I played this one - I'd almost forgotten about this one - nice recording! I particularly like "My Heart Stood Still" and "'Round Midnight"

TV rip of a Jan Garbarek concert w/ Eberhard Weber. Very relaxing. But not for every day.

Wulf, isn't Gene's playing on "Have you Met Miss Jones?" absolutely PERFECT?

I got two new "must haves" today after hearing them both last night.

First is a reissue of the 80's jazz collective "Great Friends", led by drummer Billy Hart, originally issued on the small French label Black & Blue, and now reissued on Evidence. The band also includes Sonny Fortune (alto sax), Billy Harper (tenor sax), Stanley Cowell (piano), and Reggie Workman (bass). This is some inspired stuff, and some of the best sounding Reggie Workman I have. He is WAAYY up front in the music, and really drives the band.

The other is a new release from my favorite jazz label, Criss Cross. It is a Peter Beets piano trio, called "New York Trio - Page Two." The bass is Larry Grenadier, and back from the previous New York Trio record is drummer Willie Jones III. Peter Beets plays some really swinging modern piano, and gives a great Bill Evans type rendition of "Without a Song". The Ahmad Jamal tune "Night Mist Blues" is a nearly verbatim arrangement of the tune as recorded by the Monte Alexander Trio (w/ Jeff Hamilton and John Clayton) Live in Montreaux '76. The doubletime section is worth the price of the cd alone.

Mozart, Mahler, Dvorak, Beethoven, Ysaye, Saint-Sans, Mingus, Peterson, Tchaikovsky, Vivaldi, Miles Davis, Wagner, Strauss, Bach, Mike Stern ........ And a whole lot more depending on my moods at the time, but that's most of what I have on my main playlist. I'm also addicted to my BG teacher's CD, it's pretty catchy latin jazz type stuff with some really nice bass lines.

Please note that the above is what I listen to on an almost daily basis for inspiration and musical advancement... Not the junk I listen to when I feel like letting loose (although a lot of the above would make its way onto that list too).

Ron Carter "Eight Plus" which reminded me of:

Richard Davis/Eric Dolphy "Out To Lunch" (has a beautiful duet w/ Dolphy and Richard Davis playing arco), which led me back to:

"Astral Weeks" one of my alltime favorites w/ Van Morrison and Richard Davis.

Currently in my Walkman is Herb Ellis & Red Mitchell "Doggin' Around," one from the stack of $4 Concord blowouts I picked up at Barnes & Noble a couple months ago.

Recorded live, some jaw-dropping moments from both musicians, a funny vocal by Red and hilarious cover art by Gary Larson.

Another one I've been spinning frequently is trombonists Steve Davis' "Vibe Up!" on Criss Cross, with the venerable Mr. Peter Washington on bass.

P-Wash delivers a beautiful lyrical solo on the Thad Jones ballad "The Summary" that is tops on my to-transcribe list.
