Any tips this top cost me $150 and I don't want it to chip out and self destruct. Should I treat is with penetrating epoxy or CA glue first? Should I just take very thin passes?
Thanks .tom

It works very similar to burl maple, IMO so like in maple remove little material per pass. I don't think this is any more difficult than any other figured wood. Even working it with less than optimally sharpened chisels was not difficult. tjclem 02-04-2008, 08:29 PM OK I will just take it slow ProgRapture 02-04-2008, 08:37 PM Mmmm...burled woods are sexy. I'm partial to redwood myself, but...goodness, I don't know how to spell it...amboyna? That stuff is burly goodness. Mmm...creamy, creamy burl. (Unfunny Old Greg reference). Nelson Guitars 02-04-2008, 09:12 PM Drill out the excess with a forstner bit on a drill press first. Much safer, quieter and faster. Then small passes and always, always use a template. If you can, get a slightly over sized bearing or collar for your router. Rout with it first and then change to the flush bearing. That way it assures a light cut on the final pass. Only use sharp bits. A down spiral will help too. Greg N |
