Can anyone recommend a "vintage" onboard preamp? I recently bought a handmade fretless Roomian bass which I would date to the mid 80's. It is passive, fitted with a DiMarzio humbucker in the sweet spot. Years ago I played the same bass but it had a premap in it. I would like to put a pre in this one buy buy a pre from the same period as the pickup to retaina vintage sound.

Does anyone know who made pre's in those days? Does anyone off the beaten path make their own pres these days that could get me the vintage feel I am looking for?

Thanks.

My understanding is that the Aguilar OBP-1 is their recreation of the vintage Music Man preamp... if this is a bass with a single humbucker, I'd say go for it! OBP-1's are inexpensive, sound great (they come stock on some Dingwall models, and other builders, too), and are simple to operate - bass and treble, boost only. 2 knobs (or one stacked set)
