Alot of them use pickups that are not wound by them. Tobias uses Bartolini, many others use Nordstrand. Fodera uses Aero pups, but I can't remember what Sadowsky uses.

The ones I know use their own special pups include Ritter and I think Jerzy Drozd. Skjold makes his own now too I believe.

As long as you ask politely, and let them know what you're planning to use them for, I certainly don't think it's rude.

You've got to be willing to take no for an answer of course.

Sadowsky pick ups are made by Seymore Duncan. It never hurts to ask the builder. I am looking into putting Citron pups in my Ken Lawrence and HArvey Citron has been nothing but helpful in getting the right ones.

FBB but I think he might only make them for his basses.

SGD, a guy on here too, will definitely sell them aftermarket. He makes neodymium pickups.

Rude? No why?
If they make a living doing this, they will welcome your business.
If they won't sell pickups alone, they will say no and you still just made them a compliment.
Go ahead and ask!

Sadowsky uses a lot of different pups: EMG, Nordstrand and his own(don't know if he makes them himself but his name are on them) and i've seen Sads with Barts on them too.

Let me know how it turns out. I am thinking of replacing the Aeros on my second KL and Citron never crossed my mind

Sheldon Dingwall makes his own pickups as well.

From what I've read, Sadowskys are not from Duncan, but rather DiMarzio, a variation on the UltraJazz. Could be wrong, though.

I asked wilser to make me some and he said that he would love to, but he is simply just too busy with everything else that he doesn't have the time to fit a pickup order in. If you are looking for a custom size that you can't find, nordstrand will make you custom sized pickups.

I heard that as well. There was a site with sound clips and photos, and they were nearly identical in appearance AND sound.

What pick ups are in your Lawrence? mine has Nordstrand Fatstacks but its fairly new, I am assuming Basslines?

Sheldon Dingwall makes his own pickups as well.

I believe these are outsourced to his spec...but I could be wrong....

Here's the source about the Sadowsky pickups: http://www.vial-family.ch/bass/

I believe Fury was involved with an earlier generation of the Dingwall pickups.

Fury most definitely got us going and wound all the the FD-1's. They make their own line of guitar and bass pickups that are outstanding.

All of our current pickups from the FD-2.9 versions on up are wound in-house. We also build private label pickups for other luthiers.

To answer the original question, most luthiers would not mind being asked for their pickups.

The only thing that tends to get out of hand with pickup orders is the lengthy question and answer process regarding sizes, string spacing, coil structure, output, will it work with this pre-amp etc. We're unable to be flexible in this area, Nordstrand is unbelievably flexible. Hat's off to Carey and the boys.

At current shop rates, it doesn't take long to wipe out any profit from a pickup order answering questions. If you're mindful of that when dealing with your luthier, he'll appreciate your attitude.

That site and it's soundclips motivated me to put Ultra-Jazzes in a couple basses.
