this is getting ridiculous! I want to know who is sending these guys my way? someone MUST be playing a joke on me! or is everybody else receiving these questions? I have been FLOODED in the last month or so with people asking me how they can mix woods to get a particular sound or what wood they can use to replicate wood XYZ's tone. Come on! haven't I stressed my position on this REPEATEDLY? I know it's gotta be Larry, Scott or BJ! I'm gonna send them back to you! :D

That sucks man.

While I got you here, do you think there is any lightweight alternative to mahogany?

I've haven't gotten any of those my way. Maybe you're making yourself too visible on the forum :D Take it as a compliment that they're all Pm'ing you.

I gotta tell ya though, looks to me like a lot of newbies are not "getting" all the mid-hump *copyright* jokes and might take all the "advice" seriously.

:)

Check out Brazilian Mahogany. I got sold a piece of that a few years ago. It's the body on the spalted 5 string. That thing is light! Lighter than the swamp Ash I used on the 9.

I wouldn't know if all Brazilian Mahogany is that light though :hmm:

OK, OK. I was one of them. I think its been much longer then a month. No one sent me to you. Its just that if you are new to this forum, and I was, its hard not to notice that this guy Wilser has a post or 20 in every thread. You have a much respected opinion here and its noticeable. Your the God father. Please forgive my ignorance.:D

Haha. I wasn't referring to you (if you're referring to me). :)

But what a great joke. "Yeah man, ask Wilser, he's good with these things!" Back to you, they go!

Off topic.....Kind of. Other then color, is there really all that much difference in the different species of mahogany? Is there an origin thats not suitable for instruments? Santos?

Hey wils, what wood would you recommend for a tone plate in a set-bolt-thru bass in order to sound kind of bright, smooth, dark, round, thumpy, transparent, red-orange, and triangly with a distinct nutty back note?

;)

Decaffeinated caffeine bean from the eastern himalayas. But its only retrievable by albino midgets.

I want a tone that, when I hear it, it makes me think of a Christmas tree.

hey man, there's no mid-hump® in there, I wouldn't even begin to know how to get a tone without it ;)

seriously, I'm just a hack ...who ever got the idea that I knew anything about anything?!?!?

but back to topic, I HAVE seen post referring 'tone-seekers' to me! I just can't remember who it was ...maybe that friendly wood guy from the upper left corner of the country?

I've got a bunch of Kentucky Coffetree, but I never mess with the decaf- gives me a headache. And the tone really depends on how you roast it.

I swear it wasn't me! :hiding: But I know what you mean,:scowl: worse than that are the guys who want a custom build quote to their specs. So you take the time to put together the qoute for them no matter how wild it is and they decide that they only want to spend 700.00 dollars on a 1800-2000 dollar bass Then it always comes down to "what can I cut to get in that $700 price range?" I swear I'm just going to start buying Ibanez' in bulk and put my logo on the headstock.:rollno: Would that be wrong of me??:p WOW its fun to VENT!!

You should just tell them that will buy them a bass without a neck. "You thought neck-thru was cool? How about neck-free?!" :D

Who..me??? Can't be me!!!

When I got requests to select woods to match tone needs I always declined...until I found a company in India that was able to extract tone enmorfins from wood fiber tissues as part of their essential oil extraction process. While they can provide tone enmofins in powder form, it's up to the end user to formulate the "proper" recipe of tone values. I've worked darn hard and now have a long list of proprietary tone applications that I can infuse with raw wood in my acrylizing chamber under pressure. This is done as a next to last step in dressing the wood.

CAUTION!! If you order from this company be very aware that all containers must be opened inside a decent sound chamber or the material will loose potency and really mess with the formulas.

For standard tone needs please continue to contact Wilser Ramierz Basses.

I feel for you, Wilser... for some reason lately, people from other countries keep e-mailing me, asking me to recommend woods *local to them* (like I have any idea what's local to them...) that would "give them the tone" of other exotic woods.

For standard tone needs please continue to contact Wilser Ramierz Basses.

Larry, when I read that, I almost sprayed my coffee across the room, I started laughing so hard. that, plus the pictures, of course, have just made my entire afternoon... :D

While I got you here, do you think there is any lightweight alternative to mahogany?

In all seriousness, Spanish cedar is a mahogany variant, is fairly light, and is a pleasure to work with...

hmmm... I wonder, if you opened that stuff up in an anechoic chamber, what would happen... probably evaporate into nonexistence...
