I Compiled this from various threads and things and figured it would be useful and save people asking question that might be answered.

I've written it as if Justin said it which for the most part is true as it just various quotes and things.

In terms of gear I have loads(45 + basses, 8 + amp rigs, mountains of pedals) my favourite basses are:

'66 Fender P & Starfire Reissue tied

http://www.bassplayer.com/oldcontentimages/web/w/n/m/bp0307_transjmj.jpg

But I also hold very dear:

beat-up customized T-Bird
Gibson RD Artist
Geddy Lee modded Jazz
Wal Mark I
Vox Cougar
Eko
'66 Jazz
Harmony solidbody shortscale

List of most of the basses - From Bass Player Magazine

Engelhardt ES-1 Supreme upright, with K& Bass Master Pro pickup system
’78 Electra MPC Outlaw, brown sunburst (“A ridiculous bass for the cybernetic Southern rocker in everyone, complete with modular, onboard effects.”)
’67 Fender Coronado, wildwood green
Fender 1975 Jazz Bass Reissue, black/maple
Fender 1964 Jazz Bass Custom Shop Reissue Closet Classic, sunburst/rosewood (“My main live bass with Beck for years. Those Fender Custom Shop boys do amazing things.”)
Fender Mustang, Olympic white/rosewood
Fender American Standard Precision, black/maple (“My favorite P-Bass—a pure, lovely rock tone.”)
’75 Fender Precision, root beer brown/maple (“Sounds like a funky cardboard box. Not much sustain and a classic, old tone.”)
Fender 50th Anniversary Precision Reissue, blond/maple
Fender 1951 Precision Reissue, natural/maple
’74 Gibson Ripper, natural/maple
Gibson Thunderbird, natural (“My main live bass with Ima Robot. It’s got a nice growl and it’s very loud. T-birds have thin necks that are a lot of fun.”)
Gibson Thunderbird, pelham blue
Gibson Thunderbird, natural sunburst
’79 Gibson RD Artist, natural/maple
’86 Gibson 20/20, silver
Guild Ashbory
Guild B30E acoustic bass guitar, natural
Guild Starfire, transparent red (“This one is beat to ****, but it just records and plays wonderfully. Palm-mute with a pick and you’re done.”)
Guild Starfire, natural
’71 Guild JS100, transparent brown (“Endless booty—got airtime on Macy’s record. Plays badly, but I don’t mind.”)
’73 Guild M-85, transparent brown
Hofner Club hollowbody, sunburst (“Good for a deep fundamental with a pseudo-upright flavor; has the classic Hofner tone.”)
Lakland Duck Dunn Signature, three-tone sunburst/maple
Lakland Hollowbody, sherwood green (“The best-playing hollowbody I’ve ever met, with a flexible sound. Lakland has something special going on.”)
’77 Ovation Magnum II, transparent brown
Rickenbacker 4003, fireglo
Two Roland G-77 Synth Basses, white (“A Beck live staple, mainly for the silly look. Luckily it sounds okay. I’ve got a Guyatone MD-2 delay pedal taped onto one.”)
Fretless Schecter Traditional J-style, black/rosewood
Schecter Hellcat 8-string, black
Schecter Hellcat 4-string, metallic blue
’83 Steinberger L2, black (“I bought this on a lark, but it turned out to be a cool-sounding bass that simply cannot break, even when thrown at the drummer.”)
’79 Wal Pro IIE, natural
Wal Mark 1 Custom, African shedua (“This is my favorite bass overall. It’s hard to put down, because it has an undeniable magic. I’m scared to tour with it!”)
Wal Mark I Custom, olive ash
Yamaha BB3000, wine red burst

Justin uses D’Addario chrome flatwounds on the Fender Coronado and 50th Anniversary Precision, Gibson RD Artist, the Lakland Duck Dunn Signature and Hollowbody, the Ovation Magnum, and the Guild Starfires and M-85; he strings the ’75 Fender Precision, Fender Mustang, and Guild Jazz 100 with D’Addario Half Rounds, and uses D’Addario XL 160 .050–.105 nickel roundwounds on everything else except for the Hofner, which has its original Pyramid flatwounds.

That's the hottest picture of the bunch! I WILL have one of those 70's B-15N's by the end of next month! My wife went way over-budget on our new house, so I no longer feel bad when I buy new gear that I don't really need ;)

Justin, Do you still have a Fano Rhythmstar bass? I'm a big XTC fan, especially Colin Moulding's bass playing. He played a Fano and a Vox Apollo on their last albums and read your review of a Fano also. Figuring out what Colin played caused me to buy a Wal long before they became unobtainable.

I have a Fano Rhythmstar, yes. It's pretty damn cool, I don't play it enough. Sounds great, plays so easy. Great midrange voice.

Dude, I went over 15 years playing professionally with only one bass because it was all I could afford. You can only play one at a time. Yeah, it's fun now to own a few basses for variety, but owning a buttload of basses won't make or break you. People hire Justin for his playing first.

+1. No one cares about my bass collection but me. Rick Rubin or the Dust Brothers or Butch Vig don't bat an eye when they see cartage rolling in with three giant trunks. It's actually pretty standard for myself and my peers. I do have too many basses, and mostly, let's get real, they are not really that important. I could get by with two or three if needed, butthat'snevergonnahappensogivememylaptopbacktoIca ngolookonebay!!!!!!!!!!
:D

Seriously though, there are some clients who hire me because I HAVE specific basses. One guy loves my Ricky, another T-Birds, another wants my whole collection of hollow bodies and junkers over there when I do a session.

Well at least you can justify them because its your living. I have no reason to have more than one (ok, two) other than my ocd-ish short attention span, crow like tendencies. Look! Something Shiny!

Hopefully my wife will believe they are a good investment a while longer.

That place is amazing, and what a lifesaver for guys who DON'T own all those cool basses, but find themselves in a situaton where you know you better show up with that Hofner or whatever to cover the . . .basses:) A great array of rental axes. His rates are super reasonable--he could charge more.

Lon's the best in town. And I've brought him several noteworthy clients...he deals mostly in bassists and guitarists, but also does storage/cartage for producers, drummers, touring bands, etc.

I don't know who does cartage in New York, but I'm sure a quick Google search will yield at least some results. It would be worth asking other pro players there. When I'm there and need something, I usually just rent from S.I.R.

That thing in the rack is a crappy Behringer EQ. Since banished from my world. :-)

Live compression on my bass rig doesn't work for me. I've tried several, but it just didn't suit what I want it to sound like. I like hearing that monster breathe.

Justin, do you use any of the same distortion pedals that Silverlake-based "Secular Doom Fusion" artists JESUS FIST (http://www.myspace.com/jesusfist666) use?

This electric bass/laptop duo conjures up Satan on several occasions on these free "Jesus Fist Tapes (http://www.ruinerseverhead.com)".

Feel free to download, for free, to kids, for Satanists.

We use Metasonix, Scrotum Smashers, GI Fuzz pedals, and other things that mangle, modulate, and make people angry.

See you in Silverlake!!

Cheers,

Jay

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bEO2cb6sTPc&feature=related

We used quite a few of these pedals on my "Jesus Fist Studies" record that we just tracked in San Francisco.

The main problem with some of these pedals is cost-effectiveness and size. It's difficult to slip a $500.00, 10 lb. oversized Metasonix pedal into a gig bag for a Beck acoustic show in LA. LOL! But, yeah, you should definitely sneak it in. :)

Kind of a spin off from you post on the Jack Casady thread, do you find that you are using flatswounds or roundwounds on most of your basses? ;)

jmjbassplayer
04-16-2008, 06:31 PM
Half and half. I have a P with flats, then a similar one with rounds. I have a J with flats, and a similar one with rounds. A ripper with flats, a ripper with rounds. An RD Artist with flats, an identical twin with rounds. 2 starfires with flats, one with rounds. Other basses with ancient rounds that I'll never change, 'cuz they sound so funky.

jmjbassplayer

Warwick basses? I'm sure they're quite well-crafted, but that's pretty distantly removed from my style of instrument. Wrong look and wrong tone for me. I touched one once...felt nice with that oiled plain wood finish.

I like the MXR M-80 for a straight DI, 'cuz I prefer the EQ. Para Driver has sick amp modeling, as well as decent eq. Para Driver might win because the sans amp tone is in there.

JMJ

Hi Justin, I see from the pictures of your pedalboard that you boost the mids on the MXR. Is that to help the distortion cut through if you use it? When you use it as a straight DI do you use the EQ and color button much? You seem to have plenty of other tone shaping options.

Thanks

Hi Justin, I saw a DunlopTV - Bass Player Live! 2006 vid recently where you say you use two MXR M80's, one for a straight DI as you say above and one for distortion. Do you use the first one as a straight DI, with no eq? The distortion has a bit of a love/hate thing with people on TB so good to hear you're using it.

Beck actually really likes the sound of the M80 distortion, I'm not as much as a fan. That was the one part of the tone of that box which I told them I didn't like when they were doing R&D. I find it too grainy. The way it was set for him was just a tiny bit of it added to the blend.

The clean one has a bass and mid boost of about 2-3 db on the EQ. The EQ on that pedal really shines, I feel.

I agree, the EQ is very transparent as long as you don't use the color button. It sounds like you don't on the clean channel I presume.

How do you like the Line 6 Bass Pod XT Pro? Have you tested it live?

You see I do not have the drivers license and cant take with me big pedalboards and stuff, so its kinda problematic to take with me a cab, head and pedalboard, so I wonder i the Bass Pod XT Pro is something you will say its ok live, it doesent have to be great! just ok ;)

Justin, my name is Justin as well...sweet name, great parents.
I was offered to buy a YBA 2B from a guy that sold me an all original 71' Fender P for a grand. Any idea what it's worth?

I also just purchased an Avalon U5 for the eq to run through my svt classic, aguilar agro and 2 8x10s. Any thoughts on the U5?

No idea about the YBA 2B, I don't know enough about Traynor amps.

Avalon U5 is good. Too clear on the top for my taste, but I'll use them if they are at a studio, it's fine.

I should bust out a wah, they're fun.

Octave Cat is a '70s mono synth. Sounds amazing. Use it in my studio. Not cheap.

Hey there Mr. Justin! I noticed you had a Guyatone FL-3 lying around, or at least you did at one point according to Mr Tayste. I have been thinking of trying this out and I wonder if you'd ever got around to trying it... it seems like a great analog flanger but I wonder if it has that pizzazz when used with bass. Ever used it in recording?

Hi Justin,

Been really digging into your work a lot lately. Just noticed when checking out one of the pedal board setups that you had 2 MXR micro amps and an RC boost all lined up. How are you using those in combination or what inspired the 3 of them placed there?

I'm getting really into tone lately and have been drooling over some of the timeless rock sounds you get, esp on the IR stuff. How much of that grind is coming from amps (guitar amps too, yeah?) as opposed to pedals? There's so much subtlety in getting a great clean/grindy rock tone. Any insight greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Dave

micro amps are a cheap/easy way to level match several different basses before all the pedals. RC boost is a straight up distortion vibe.

Hard to say how much of my grindy tone on Ima Robot recordings is from amps, maybe half of the tone...I love guitar amps, that's my key. guitar amp/cleaner (yet still dirty) amp/clean DI.

Do you ever run guitar amps live or do you run them into bass cabs to stop the speakers from exploding?

jmjbassplayer
12-03-2008, 09:44 AM
Never live, although I did it for a minute with Beck - ran a Peavey Classic 50 with some bottom rolled off. In the studio, small guitar amps at the point of exploding are great.

Hey Justin, just wondering what distortions or fuzz pedals or rack gear do you use in NIN live? I do the bulk of NIN stuff with an svt classic into an agro and a russian big muff. I'm not sure if this is a question that has already been asked. If it has been asked then sorry for the question. Thanks!

with the influences i've seen you list, and your unique voice on electric (especially for a rock bassist), i'd love to hear your approach to fretless... do you ever it?

if so, can you point me in the direction of some recordings where you use it?

i haven't seen any listed, but i've been curious for a while.

I love fretless, honestly. Seems kind of weird that I would, but I really do.

Examples:

Pet "Pet" on Atlantic (out of print)
Tori Amos "Hey Jupiter", "From The Choirgirl Hotel"

I'll try to think of some others.

Fretless Schecter Jazz, a handmade model from mid '90's with a Duncan preamp (not like me, but it was suggested and I went with it), stock Schecter "monster tone" J pickups that are amazing. They still do that bass, but it's a custom order.

Hey Justin!

Got to see you play live again on Sunday here in Portland. Saw you in Seattle during the summer. I know here on the boards there has been a few discussions about your Geddy (well both of them), and you had mentioned your tech was building you a new one...but I can't find that thread. Anyways, point I'm trying to get to was not only is that a beautiful looking bass, looks like you have both of those cream Dimarzios in there now. The tone during "Discipline" was amazing, probably one of my favorite parts of the show. Could sit there and listen to that thing all day.

Thanks for the awesome show, enjoy the upcoming time off!

Dave

(I sure hope that was indeed the Geddy, was tough to see from the soundboard and the fog)

Thanks. It's a cool bass. I think we need to work on the pickup choices and electronics a bit, though. I still want more bottom out of it. It plays wonderfully, and that particular P/J setup has a unique midrange that I don't want to lose. The one I have is also different by nature of a Badass bridge, a bone nut, and the Inca Silver body with matching headstock.

ummm...somebody....tissue please....

BEEEEEEEEutiful!

Can't decide b/w POG and the new MXR bass octaver..mmmmm

JimmyM
05-16-2009, 06:08 AM
I went with a Micro Pog because it does the best chimey 12-string sound out of the octave ups I've heard, it tracks about perfectly on every note, even with chords and drone notes, and it's smaller than the Pog and does everything I need. But for octave down, the Bass Octave Deluxe has a hell of a tone to it. Not as clean as the Micro Pog...it seems a little more synthy and fuller sounding on the bottom than the Micro Pog. And it's hard to dislike a pedal that has a "girth" knob :bassist:

But since I only want one octaver on my board, I went with the Micro Pog for versatility. Hell of a pedal, that Micro Pog. Pog, too.

I love the tone I'm getting from the tonehammer but I'm still trying to find the best way to use it recording. Do you use it as dirty DI and blend with a clean one? It keeps the low end great but i still like to blend with clean DI. Or do you mostly just use it for clean tones? I just used it this weekend as part of the amp tone (blended with seperate cleand DI) and was happy with the results but it seemed like waste of the hammer's DI feature. Didn't even thinking about grabbing the extra dirt DI out until just now! Crap.

Don't know the G Major. I use the G Force for gating, some very sophisticated pitch, filtering, multi-tap DDL's, a bunch of stuff. Mat Mitchell, the senior NIN tech, told me the G Major wouldn't do the job, and they already had a G Force in the gear stock, so I grabbed it and started programming away.

Bass Big Muff is fairly smooth. Russian Big Muff, which I also have, is just "gnarlier" sounding overall. BUT: the Bass Big Muff has more bottom-end heft.

Malleko is a whole other beast. A dry/wet blendable ripping/tearing fuzz sound, that can be totally toxic sounding, but also can be dialed back to taste, even fairly dark.

Blizzard, I think the stuff in my rig right now is in another thread that has photos of my rig which I posted in the beginning of the tour. Just so I don't repeat myself, have a browse, and I think you'll run across it.

As far as the Super Fuzz, are you talking about the O.G. Univox one or the Voodoo Labs? The Univox piece is to die for. Used in the studio, it's insane, but delicate. I'd put one of those on a loop for sure so you don't have to keep stepping on it. That way, you could also insert an EQ pedal in there as well if you wanted to find some more low end, attenuate highs or mids, etc.

Silicon is what I have on the assmaster, so I don't really have the savvy to comment on the germanium.

i'm talking about the robot factory tentacle love super fuzz! a bit rare so sorry for the confusion. it's modelled after the audio monk potion fuzz which is based off the ole watson super fuzz. thanks justin!

Justin,

Thanks for taking the time to check in on the forums & chat with us Joe Sixpack bassists!

I've read that you've added the Sansamp VT Bass pedal to your arsenal; could you give your thoughts on that pedal? Thanks & keep up the great playing!

You're welcome.

I've written about it a few times, I think. Perhaps do a search?

In lieu of that, I think it's great. Kind of a must-buy, in my opinion. Good character, nice EQ.

I'll give it a whirl. The problem with searching for the VT Bass in particular is that TB's search function doesn't play well with anything that has less than 3 characters, so the "VT" part causes an error. The custom Google search may work though.

Thanks again!

Ya, Google search works with VT. Pedal of the future, BTW.

Jimmy, it's a real shame you don't like that pedal. You could have sold so many people on it.

Ah well. We have Mr. Meldal-Johnsen on that job already. ;)

Yeah, if I had any sort of name, I'd have had Tech 21 send me a check already. But Justin sold me so ultimately he should get a way bigger check than me. That's how the pyramid works ;) Not that Tech 21's a pyramid...sometimes I think the music business is, though.

Hi Justin!

I have noticed that you have changed your T Bird bridges from the original 3 point bridges to Badass bridges! Why? Soundwise...?? Or the limitations of adjustments?

Please let me know!!

All the best.Ulf

jmjbassplayer
08-04-2009, 06:48 PM
All of the above. At first, I did it just because I was sick of the bridge and saddles coming off all the time. Then I noticed the tone became "snappier" and "faster", if that makes sense. I liked it, in contrast with how dark those pickups are.

I believe hipshot (or some other brand) makes a direct replacement for the 3 point PITA, have you tried them?

Pretty sweet, thanks for posting. Would go good on my RD Artists, but I hate to change the look. Plus I never change strings on those basses, so I think the three-point doesn't bother me so much on those.

Hey Jus, I saw you had two B-15N's. I have the chance to buy a mint condition B-15S. Have you had chance to work with these amps at all?

This question is open to others too.

Thanks!

this may seem like a stupid, exaggerated question, but i am completely serious. i have done talkbass and googles searches many times and haven't had any results.

i have been searching for a wide (4"), non-leather strap for quite a while (shoulder injury). i was watching the NIN rehearsal videos for the 100th time today and couldn't help but fixate on your strap on your Geddy w/ the Quarterpounders... do you have any idea who makes it?

for what it is worth, those videos slay, absolutely killer stuff!!!

Planet Waves. Very comfy. 4" nylon strap with padding. I actually reverted to thinner ones again, since my back troubles have abated. But those will help you, for sure. You could even pad it more yourself, I'll wager.

Hi Justin,

Are you still using the Swollen Pickle at all in your effects? I just won one on the bay yesterday and am excited to try it out.

If so, do you have trouble getting it to sit in the mix? Thanks.

It's really great. But YES. It has trouble sitting in the mix, just like some Big Muff's do as well. It's big and bloomy on the bottom, and sizzly and gnarly up top. A big, gnarly, ten-ton smiley face. I used it on a NIN song live called "Ruiner", and another one called "1,000,000" in the breakdown. Fun pedal.

Well, I got my Swollen Pickle two days ago. I hate to use the term "steroids," but OMG! I seriously have to set the loudness around 9 o'clock or it is absolutely overbearing, trying to jump from clean. I can definitely see some uses for this, but I think it's probably the type of pedal I would play an entire song with rather than attempting to adjust it to the point where I could punch in and out of it. Time will tell. Thanks for your response -- I had wondered if you were using it on any of the real saturated, fuzzy NIN tunes, and you answered my question.

On the Pickle, turning up the little scoop knob helps a lot.

In regards to a previous post you made about not changing strings.......

How often do you find you change your strings whilst in a recording session?

Hey Justin,

I rarely do anymore. I think my sweat has become more alkaline as I've gotten older, thereby helping the "rot" that occurs. Live with NIN, basses got changes every day or two. But with sessions, I leave strings on as long as possible, unless I get into a mode requiring major rock "slice", then I change every couple of days per bass.

Ruiner has one of my favorite bass-only sections of all time. That bluesy bit in the middle of the song is pure bliss. Ever since you joined NIN I was wondering what it would be like with this line-up. Turns out it's great :hyper:

I think you may be the right man for this question...

Avalon u5 v. A Designs REDDI v. Ridge Farm Gas Cooker

I ordered a u5 today. I am hearing great things about the REDDI and love what it is modeled after. I can not find a Gas Cooker anywhere, but was wondering what people who had experience with it thought.

Thank you sir.

jmjbassplayer
09-25-2009, 11:52 AM
U5 is a good DI. Sometimes I've found it to put too much of a microscope on the high end. Other times, I've plugged in and, going into the right pre, it sounded great.

REDDI is amazing, and special in my mind. But not flexible. Mine doesn't even have a "thru" jack like they make them with now.

Gas Cooker might be my favorite. Used it many a time, because they have them in house at Sunset Sound Factory on Selma in Hollywood, one of my favorite studios. But yes, they are nearly impossible to come by.

In a studio scenario, remember how important a mic pre is going to be to this chain. That adds a whole new experience to the tone palette. Which is why I've spent equal time and consideration in the mic pre department.

U5 is a worthy DI, and great engineers I know use it constantly. It's also far more versatile than a REDDI, so I think you'll be in good shape.

I don't know that particular model of B-15, no. I have two "N" and one "R".

I'm still amazed at how well the B-15R records, and overall how useable that little amp is. You can hear it on my link below.
The last engineer I worked with loves the thing so much, he's been renting it from me for the past couple of months now.

Ah, I was not aware that the new REDDI has a thru. I am pretty much sold on getting one to have around and play with after hearing it in action.

I've owned the u5 before and loved it, but got rid of it when I thought the thru was a bit noisy. Turned out it was a few bad pre's in my SVT AV.

I'm excited to have one again.

Two of my favorite bassist tones live and in recording use the Gas Cooker - Nick O'Malley of Arctic Monkeys and Paul Turner of Jamiroquai. If I ever find one I'm sure I'll jump to pick it up, but for now I think I'll be happy with the u5 and picking up a REDDI down the road.

On a totally different note, I'm totally sold on the DB750/412 or 810 combo after hearing you and Paul play with it. Sounds like what I'm also looking for in my Classics with just that much more great mids. I know when I choose a company to go with I will choose Aguilar now. It always came down to A's for me (Ampeg, Aguilar, Ashdown), but I think Agg takes the cake now :)

Kudos on sick tone!

Thank you for taking the time to answer my question sir.

Unless they recently started wiring the thru jack to the REDDI's circuit, I don't know if the thru jack is all that. It would be nice if you could put the REDDI sound into an amp, but last I heard the thru jack is just straight through and no REDDI sound.

Jimmy, I know the purpose for the REDDI was supposed to be for studio purposes only and I think they're trying to keep it that way.

Jimmy, I know the purpose for the REDDI was supposed to be for studio purposes only and I think they're trying to keep it that way.
Making it 10 lbs. and 14" long is a good start. I have no intentions of using one live. I run a Countryman DI through the speaker out of my SVT or B-15...pretty much the same thing, give or take...plenty good for live without lugging a big red monster of a DI.

But believe it or not, there are some guys who use them for gigs. I don't see what it would hurt the design to be able to pass that tone through to the amp. I think he would sell some to people who want to use it live. Would it really degrade the signal to do that? But the dude who runs A-Designs apparently has zero intention of doing it and thinks it's ridiculous that anyone would want it. I kind of see how the market would be limited for it, but I wonder why he cares so much. It's not unheard of for bass players to bring studio gear on gigs. Look how many people use high end preamps and channel strips that were made for the studio.

Wow, $300 new...that's an expensive pedal to buy on the word of a friend. I guess that's why it's been disco'ed.

EDIT: Saw in the FX forum that you paid like $100 for it. Never mind.

Haven't peeped it, no. Saw those once but was immediately turned off by the visual aesthetic and huge footprint. I know, those are pretty poor criteria. But seriously: I need more pedals that are compact and do a lot with modest real estate! That said, I'll wager it sounds good. That pre and post EQ is a cool, innovative concept.

Not to me they're not. I didn't think they mattered to me until I tried to work a Whammy Pedal into my board. Loved it, but the Micro Pog weighs half a pound, so I'm using the Micro Pog. So now I'm more about visuals and footprints. Especially footprints...don't always have a big enough stage to even stand, let alone run giant effects.
