I find that the girth of my Epi goth bird neck is too much for me. So the other day I decided to whip out the trusty non-directional-orbital-sander (henceforth known as "the jitterbug") and started whacking away at that demonic black paint. I got the neck down to a near-jazz profile, but with the original width of the neck. I took some sandpaper and a soft block and evened out my work, got the neck nice and smooth.

Then came the rough part. Painting.

I bought some automotive flat black, this stuff is NASTEE! It's thick, it runs, and it's very sticky. I don't like it at all. I figured I would take the entire back of the neck down to bare wood and start over. But what paint to use this time? Any suggestions? I have some black primer, but I can't talk myself into using it, I know what moisture does to primer.

if you want something sprayable and simple, take a look at the Reranch products. I'd suspect that a can of primer, a can of black, and a can of satin clear will get you all set-up

if you get a login page, try back in a day or two - the owner is a touring musician and closes the store when he's on the road

all the best,

R

Yes, thanks for that link Rodent.

I am saving ReRanch as a last resort. I'm hoping someone can suggest something I can buy at a hardware/automotive store. I have a can of clear, would I be able to spray clear right over primer and then knock the sheen off with some steel wool?

well I have used flatblack paint on basses before... the thing you really need to keep in mind... it won't stay flat for long, greasy fingers/hands? nice and shiny bass, play on the same spot a lot? works just like polishing... so you'll probably end up with a lot of shiny spots...

in my case it was just what I wanted, so I don't mind... but I could imagine that a month after spraying it flat and it ends up all shiny, you won't be to happy...
