Hi JMJ. Thank you for taking the time to speak with us on the forum. I dig your stuff.

I vaguely recall reading that you have used Guitar Rig 3 from Native Instruments. If so, could you give us your thoughts?

I bought it recently, including the Kontrol footpedal unit. I have to say, it has been the most liberating effects experience I've had to date. I'm into synthesis, and must say having the ability to control any parameter on any effect with an LFO, a triggered ADSR envelope, or an input-based envelope is incredibly cool. Using the Kontrol footpedal, one can control, for example, the cuttoff frequency of a filter at the same time that one of the modifiers are controlling it. I've found it to be very dynamic, and unprecidented in my experience (and experiments) with effects.

Of course, my examples above barely scratch the surface of what Guitar Rig 3 can do. I'm really excited about it. I've even started selling-off a bunch of effects.

Thanks again for taking the time here on the forum. I hope I get a chance to meet you some day.

Hey Squarewave,

Your avatar is genius. Bravo.

You're welcome, and thank you for the kindness.

I LOOVE GR3. It really blows my mind. I record with it now sometimes when I don't have the capability of micing and amp, like when I'm recording at my place with a drummer, acoustic guitarist, or singer at the same time. Sounds like you're potentially getting far deeper into it than I ever will, in terms of controlling effect parameters in those unique ways. Nice one.

I went so far as to let them use a few of my basic presets on their website, so I guess that constitutes some sort of endorsement now. Neato.

Best,
JMJ

Are things like Guitar Rig and the Ampeg SVX feasible to use in a live rig? If so, how complicated is it to hook up?

You are listed as an endorser on their artist page (http://www.native-instruments.com/index.php?id=gr3artists&L=1). ;)

Wow! Well, alrighty then. :-)

It's feasible to use it as a live rig, sure. I've seen people do it, particularly in electronic/experimental groups. But you'd better have a nice, quick laptop so that you avoid any last shred of latency. The tones are really good. I've been doing remote recording sessions here with it, and people love the results.

I smell a call to your manager coming ;)

Quick laptop, huh? Welp, that lets me out. I guess I'll keep doing it the hard way.

Hi JMJ,

Are you using Guitar Rig 3 on tour with NIN? On stage?

No, but considering it big-time.

My guitar player just recently bought GR3 and I've been REALLY impressed with his tone and ability to experiment on the fly with sounds. Lately, he's been panning in stereo (since we use in-ears) two different amps each responding differently to drive etc.

I noticed there are a few different bass rigs available within GR3, but have yet to try them. You would think Native would come out with an entire Bass Rig pretty soon....

On The DL,

I think it's inevitable, or at least more bass functionality within the same program.
