emjazz 04-25-2008, 09:21 PM Justin, I was just listening to the song Liquid Diamonds....That whole album with you and Matt Chamberlain....stunning. I love the pairing of you both. Could you explain a little bit about the process of recording with Tori Amos. Did you all work out the songs together or did you go in and do your parts separately from them?
.....that bass line on Liquid Diamonds is exceptional. I love the space that you leave by shortening some of your notes within the groove. I also love how you lengthened the phrase that your playing. This is something that I try to think about in my own lines so as not to make things sound too stagnant or repetitive.
As an aside, do you happen to remember what bass you used on that song?
Thanks for your time Justin.
Psychicpet 04-25-2008, 09:34 PM no, you're freakin' kidding me.... he posts here!!!????!!!!????!!!!???!!!!
ok, SUBSCRIBED!!! :D
absolutely one of the all time best rhythm sections of recent memory
so angular/melodic/and down right great!
jmjbassplayer 04-25-2008, 09:54 PM Thanks, y'all. I adore playing with Matt. We get into it.
Tori records live. When I say live, I mean vocals too. Very rugged, emotional sessions; very seat-of-the-pants. She's one of the finest musicians I've ever been in proximity to. Matt as well. Stunning. Nothing else to say; we did rhythm tracks live together, then electronics are O/D. Good times. I hope to get to do more someday with her, for sure.

Psychicpet 04-26-2008, 04:07 PM very cool, and definitely translates to the recordings well.
emjazz 04-29-2008, 11:56 AM Ok, so I'm a bit of a dope.....I was on my way home from teaching lessons last night listening to this record. I got to Liquid Diamonds and thought.....hmmmm.....this sounds a lot like George Porter Jr.......so I checked. Indeed. I hadn't had the cd cover with me before to look it up. Sorry about that.
However, I do have a specific question about one of the tunes which I'll have to ask later when I have the cd near me again. I think you use a Woolly Mammonth on one tune....it's so snarly and growly. You leave aaaalllll kinds of space during the verses and come in with this growly statement at times. It's realy heavy. I love it. I really want to know if that's you during the choruses. It's very synth like with delay so I can't tell. Very cool sounds all around. I'll look up the specific tune later.
Great to have you on here Justin. Thanks man. I love your playing and your approach.
......Ah, just looked up the song name. It's Cruel. What is that effect on your bass in the verses? Is that the Mammoth? Are you playing in the choruses? Very creative playing.
jmjbassplayer 04-29-2008, 12:02 PM Yeah, George played Liquid Diamonds. SO good, right?
The album is full of what Tori calls my "bass painting" (effects). But yes, the song cruel is a combo of several effects: Boss OD1, BlueTube and Fuzz Factory, with a very strange reverb, which I forget. And yes, I'm playing throughout. Not sure what the chorus ended up being, it's been about ten years now I think, and the sessions were a bit of a blur.
Best,
jMJ
