Bart preamps sound good, but all the ones I've used (like the NTMB-918 and TC) lack headroom if you turn the gain up, and with the gain all the way down they have less output than the passive pickups.

I just had a long time customer bring me his Pedulla MVP (with the NTMB-918P preamp) asking me to see if I could get more level out of the bass. It's a great sounding bass, but really quiet.

Even my bass with my passive pickups are like twice as loud.

I put a Bartolini 4.6A/P in my Brice HXB 406. Sound-wise it made a 110% improvement. Loudness-wise, I keep the gain on the preamp all the way down, otherwise it will overdrive the preamp in my Ampeg. Needless to say, it can get pretty loud. Perhaps the OEM designs are different than the aftermarket design preamps (as in the case of that Pedulla above)???

I voted the Audere but I'd have done that for the Audere 3 band as well - I have two of those and think the world of them.

The Audere by the way is not designed to produce gain. It outputs about the same level of signal as it is presented with on the pickup side from my experience. Which drives my amp, my DI, a mic pre for my recording work, and the affects I use nicely. I can't say that I would want anything more from it in terms of gain. I don't see increased signal from my bass as being relevant given the rest of the signal chain.

What I really like about the Audere is the more or less organic quality to it's sound. It really just sounds like my bass but with an active buffered blend and a broader toanal pallet.

Odd. My Bart loaded Pedullas have a ton of gain and headroom. I have to hit the active pad on my amp. I turn the trim pot inside the control cavity to about 2/3 up and have never had an issue with weak signal.

Both preamps are great and will help your bass get it's true tone out into the crowd.

It's a very old MVP.. from the mid 80's. I always remember it not being very loud compared to my EMG equipped basses, but I was very surprised that it wasn't as loud as my passive pickup bass. The gain control causes a lot of clipping when I turn it up past the lowest setting.

I have an old Hi-A (the old name for Bartolini) TC-1 preamp from 1977 that does the same thing.

They probably changed it on the new ones.
