My 12 year old daughter wants to start playing bass. I'd like to think its because "I" play but, its probably more because her "friend" plays. Oh well.

Ive been playing for almost twenty years but am completely self taught. I learned by reading tabs, slowly learning where the notes were and what they were called, G, A, C etc. Ive played in bands and written tons of music. With my limited learning, Ive done quite well.

But, when it comes to scales, modes and reading, the stuff that makes you a learned and versatile musician, I know nothing. So, I cant teach her and I dont want to start her down the wrong path. It would take a long time to recover from where I am. I dont want to put her where I am.

So, where do you start if you do it "the right way"?

Basic method book then a classical method book, that will show you
proper fingering. I was self taught and had bad habits, fingering was one of the
things that really corrected my left hand and helped a lot in the future.
