Long story short, Mid February I ended up with a mallet finger (tore the tendon of a knuckle) after snowboarding. No idea how it happened as there was no pain and I'm really good about balling my hands into fists if I wipe. Anyways.

My finger (right ring finger) came out of the splint 2 weeks ago and this past week I've finally been able to comfortably play for the most part. The problem is tied to the stiffness of the join and tendon, which slowly gains flexibility with time and being able to comfortably bend the last knuckle from the straight position. I can almost form a fist now.

Even though the finger isn't one of the first two that I pluck with, there is issues due to the pinky, ring, and middle all being tied to a common set of tendons. Most groovy things I can still play, but peddling lines can be a real burner as the side of my hand tenses up now from stiffness in the join and the hand not moving 'naturally' as it were.

Basically I'm wondering for those who have injured the hands what measures they took for rehab, to get their muscles playing comfortably again. The clinic only mentioned things specific to everyday use, which is a bit different to what we bass players do with our hands. Are there things you were told or found that sped recovery in a healthy manner without overdoing it?

The interior tendons are still strong ( as they weren't torn), but the exterior one is weak as it's freshly knitted. So raking has been out of the equation for a bit :( At least it gave me some time to practice left handed tapping :P

USE THE BALLS, LUKE!

I prefer the two-inch solids(metal) or the two-and-a-half-inch hollows(also metal,no chimes). Excellent therapy and daily loosening/toning excercise. Remember the "Caine Mutiny"?

Thanks for the tip.

I'm aware of the movie, and looking at wikipedia the original book, but I've never seen/read it. So the reference is lost on me :(

In the movie(Bogart) Captain Queeg had a set of balls he orbited in his hand.....a lot. It's what people I know mentioned years ago when I started using them. Kept them on their toes when there were strawberries around.....
