VIEW FULL LIVE VERSION : got a ton of free scrap, now what?
jordan_frerichs 05-20-2008, 11:58 AM the school year is ending, so they are taking all their scrap lumber and tossing it out. their is a whole trailer full of it, that my teacher said i could pick through and take what i wanted. now i am fining ways to use the tiny pieces. any tips for making use of them? i know it would be helpful for you guys to know what sizes i am working with, so i will get pics of my score tonight after i bring it home. for know, what can i do with the leftovers? their are a few squares of maple thought i would glue the faces of, and try pickup covers with. with the bigger peices i though maybe i would glue them all together, hollow them, find a top and back of maple of ash, and glue those one, then do a coffee burst to hid the random side laminates. what would you guys do?
SDB Guitars 05-20-2008, 12:10 PM You could always make something like this:

:hiding:
eleonn 05-20-2008, 12:34 PM I guess you can do some pickup covers, wooden bridges or knobs for future projects. If you have long enough pieces you could use them a wooden bind material for fretboards.
Rodent 05-20-2008, 12:35 PM what would you guys do?
"burn it ... burn it all"
you could also go into business making wooden knobs or selling knife scales on eBay

p.s. 10 points for whomever can identify this movie quote
jordan_frerichs 05-20-2008, 12:43 PM i know the movie. can't think of the name though. is it the one where these kids rob some rich dude, then the crazy one wants to burn it to escape, and when he spells "burn it" he puts the "r" backwards, and bruce willis or whatever his name is, is after a special disc? saw it a week ago
jordan_frerichs 05-20-2008, 12:45 PM there is a piece of black walnut with some flaming that i could make a sweet bookmatch out of. like i said pics later.
Rodent 05-20-2008, 12:46 PM nope - not the one I have in mind
but unlike MCAS testing, you're allowed a second guess :)
all the best,

jordan_frerichs 05-20-2008, 12:55 PM OH I KNOW! I KNOW. that episode of south park where they have the list of who's ugliest , and the the qoute is from the little dude that looked like the elephant man "BURN IT! BURN IT DOWN TO DA GWOUND!" lol. probably another bad guess, but it still makes me laugh my ass off
Rodent 05-20-2008, 01:16 PM another good guess ... but nope
this quote is from a big screen movie that was produced after 1980

Take it to the band saw and rip it into blanks for pen turners - you can make a bloody fortune!

Nelson Guitars 05-20-2008, 07:04 PM My daughters friend makes jewelry out of wood and asked if I had any scrap exotics. I gave her a bunch of ebony, cocobolo, bloodwood, purple heart and on and on. She was very grateful. Then I made another care package for her and she made me stop. Very little goes a long way in that kind of work!
What do you all do with the piles of small pieces too small to use but too big to throw away? I have finally gotten to the point of having one box over flowing and that is it! Well except for a few other piles around the shop, but I am working on it! This is even after having some of the most exotic wood fires in my wood stove every winter for miles around. BTW Cocobolo burns really hot!

trb6pJM2 05-20-2008, 09:09 PM you could make something like this. it's a really simple design, but at least you're getting some use out of the wood
