I know this will probably sound daft, but I'm new to double basses. I have bought a bass which, although new and Chinese, has been set up professionally and plays and sounds very nicely. My only gripe with it is the depth of the neck - this isn't a problem as the luthier I bought it from will shave down the neck and varnish it FOC. I was wondering of anyone had the time and inclination to measure the depth of their necks so I can gauge better whether I should stick with it as it is for a while before taking the plunge as, obviously, shaving the neck down is okay, but I can't very well stick all the shavings back on after the event if I feel I've made an error in judgement!

I just measured the circumference of my Juzek's neck at ~6" near the nut and ~7" at the heel.

Typical and good neck measurements are:
42mm wide at the nut
A fingerboard thickness on the sides of 10mm or a little less.
Neck thickness inluding the fingerboard just in front of the nut at 34mm and 41mm including the fingerboard at the beginning of the curve of the neck where it joins the body.

Most commercially made basses tend to be a little thicker and wider leaning towards a kind of chunky too thick feeling.

These measurements are best taken by a vernier caliper.
