I'll give a plug for an Australian - Emma Anzai from the Sick Puppies. The self proclaimed 'female flea'...she's not as good as she thinks but she's got some game.

+1 for Tal, Meshell and Esperanza

I just saw Tal with Wanye Krantz a few nights ago. She's an inspiring, intense bassist and a very nice person :)

I've been wanting Tal's CD for ages, hoping to get it for my birthday :P

You won't be disapointed! It's really good with some great players on it. I've got two :D (one is autographed) *Yeah, I'm a fan*

i think that's how you spell it
pronounced like "piper sky"
she was the bassist for blue october a few years ago
i don't know if she's considered "great", but she nails "razorblades", so she's pretty freaking solid
and she's hoooooooooootttttttttttt
possibly the hottest bassist i've seen

+1 for Lydia. Wow, her groove was so deep. Right up there with Me'shell. Yeah, all these names are good ones. Rhonda is ridiculous; same for Tracy Wormwood. I think Me'shell has been the most influential on my end. I'm ALWAYS inspired by her playing and musicality. If I could only REALLY play like that, I'd really happy.

Kim Deal from Pixies and The Breeders. She just has that "beauty in simplicity" type charm for me.

Got the Esperanza CD today and it is incredible, she is also on the cover of Bass Player magazine this month. The music may not be for everyone, but i really like it so far. Very much traditional jazz. I have Tal's CD as well and it is good too.

Julie Slick!

Yeah, man. Finally picked up a copy of Adrian Belew Power Trio's Side Four, and she is the real deal. (Her brother Eric, on drums, is no slouch either.) For those not familiar, there's a bunch of live clips on Youtube.

+10 for Lydia! I saw her live earlier this year and was so blown away by her groove and her great singing!

I've also had the good fortune to meet and talk with Carol Kaye a few times - WOW! She can still whip off every bass line she has played over the ages!

+1. One of my all-time faves. Technically uncomplicated lines, but with a great sense of rhythm and space.

Gail was the first woman I thought of....Also Janice Tanaka comes to mind...

There are a lot of great female bassists...one I don't think I read here was Amy Humphrey from the two piece band Clatter. Speaking of Amy's, Aimee Man comes to mind!
