I need a mic stand. Been using the guitarist's spare for long enough now.

I use DR Pro stands. I don't know if this forum allows linking, but you can find them on Musician's Friend. They're a little pricier than some stands, but not as bad as some. These things are solid. They've been holding up for years now. I'd rather pay a bit more up front, and not have to replace stands every year. Check them out!

I prefer a mic stand with a round base, those tripods are tippy and take up alot of space. The one I have is heavy! I'm using a 6 inch goose neck, but a small boom would work as well. I don't know the brand name (I've had it for years!)

I buy whatever's on sale. It's a mic stand. I prefer round bases, though.

I prefer tripods for the portability, but they need to have sturdy legs and not those sloppy loose ones, they're very irritating. When you fold in the legs, they should stay in that position.

Then I wouldn't buy a stand that is too light --> probably poor quality. The screws must also be of good quality and not too small.

König&Meyer (K&M) stands have always been good IMO. Just stow the stands well every time you don't use them and don't overtighten the screws (regardless of brand), and they should last for a very long time, especially the quality stands. I still have the same K&M mic stand as I bought over 10 years ago, and I've used it on virtually all gigs I've played at. You can see it's been used, but it's still functioning well. :)

A round base is fine for a vocal mic stand if the mic is a lightweight dynamic model -- and if the mic is mounted close to the stand's vertical pole. If you're using it for studio recording with a heavy condenser mic, the round base will be too wobbly and unstable. I prefer a tripod stand for those applications. The round base will also make the setup too wobbly if you must extend the mic on a boom far out from the base. Experiment first -- that will demonstrate what you need.
