There was a Fender PJ I played at a church I used to play at and it had an amazing slap tone with the factory Fender pups, however, it was active. I'm not sure about the passives but that active CIJ was hot!

Sadowsky.

Do you like the Sadowsky in passive? My RV5 sounds bland in passive but kills with the preamp engaged.

I think that the main problem when people play a Sadowsky in passive mode is that it is compared with the same bass in active mode and then most people find it dissapointing.

I have compared my Sadowskys with other passive basses and I'm sorry to say (not really :p) that the Sadowsky still sounds better than the others. Then I engage the preamp and it simply kills 'em all. :D

I think the PJ5 sounds unreal passive, I liked my old RV5 passive as well ... its just taste. Gotta remember to bump up the gain a little at your amp when comparing.

Better than the Villex 3 band pups with the mids pulled back?

The Villex "Classic" and the Villex NVT are two different animals.

The "Classic" sounds more "vintage" yet "denser" so when you use the mid-control (not a mere mid-cut!!!!) it opens up the sound quite a bit and it fits the "scooped" scope of slap eq curve

The NVT sounds wider and has snap to start with, so cutting the mids gives a "scooped" EQ approach but it's different sound compared with the Classic.

The "Classic" line fits the classic slap sounds immediately whereas the NVT gives a broader sound

I'd go with a Sadowsky, I had a Nordstrand NP4 in my CS '58 P bass and didn't really think much of it.
