VIEW FULL LIVE VERSION : First Built, finished, finally, 5 string fretless
Yellow 06-26-2008, 08:48 PM I couldnt find my original thread with progress, but anyhow, here it is.
I am the happiest man today, so here is my first baby:
Jatoba/Maple body
Maple/Walnut neck
Bloodwood fingerboard with maple inlay fretlines and abalony dots
Big Singles Nordstrand pups
Audere pre
May be I did go a little overboard to pimp it out with gold hardware but I do like it,
I will take some better shots of it but I just couldn't wait and just grabbed a few to post.

Let me know what you think, I sure have learned a lot during this project. There is tons more to learn I know.
SDB Guitars 06-26-2008, 09:22 PM looks good... kinda like if Carl Thompson tangled with a Tele bass...
rob2966 06-26-2008, 09:24 PM Looks good - wondering why you didn't trim that mess of strings before taking photos :)

Yes, I was just too anxious to take a couple of photos, you know... in the heat of exitement.
antiunderscores 06-27-2008, 02:19 AM looks cool... rooted... but cool
looks cool.
How does it play?
The neck looks kind of bent, but so do the strings, so it'll be problem with the pictures.
Cool first build
fretlessman71 06-27-2008, 02:41 AM Looks gorgeous; hope it sounds the same. VERY well done.
One question, though: Is it necessary to learn thumb position to play the last few frets? Not a lot of cutaway there... was that intentional?
Jensby design 06-27-2008, 02:55 AM One question, though: Is it necessary to learn thumb position to play the last few frets? Not a lot of cutaway there... was that intentional?some of us use our right hand to fret too ;)
. . .wait,is it still called fretting if the bass is fretless

You are right the cutaway turned out unintentionally smallish, it is a bit aukward to play last couple of frets, but I can live with that until I build another one. There are a lot of things I will take into account next time. I am just happy Ipulled off this one.
Yellow 06-27-2008, 09:40 AM looks cool.

Cool first build
Plays really well, thanks to numerous advice from TB members
setup was a breeze.
Yellow 06-27-2008, 09:43 AM It is ambitious and tough to plough through a lot of info and
figure things out in terms of steps and techniques.
I am happy with my first bass and I want to thank you all who took part in helping me figure things out.

You guys are bass players, you shouldn't be playing up there anyways!

black_labb 06-27-2008, 10:00 AM i like the way the fingerboard continue up the neck. covers the set neck joint and avoids the sometimes awkward looking heel in the body behind the fingerboard.
bassteban 06-27-2008, 10:08 AM I like it a lot. Very nicely finished, nice design. The headstock very much appeals to me(I like them big). All that said, I think there are going to be some functionality lessons(the already-mentioned cutaway & potential neck-dive come to mind)learned here, but the bass will teach you far better than my little comments. Bravo on your first.

A la Wilser...I liked that idea on his basses that is where I saw it first.

fretlessman71 06-27-2008, 12:10 PM I bet you can use the extended fingerboard as a right-hand "ramp" of sorts - I find that when I'm soloing, I can get more "mwah" when I move my right hand to the end of the fingerboard. Worth a try!
tomvelsor 06-27-2008, 12:27 PM looks pretty good for a first build.
Ray Holt 06-27-2008, 12:28 PM Hey, I just realized your headstock resembles the shape of mine. Back off :spit: :D
Rudyboy98 06-27-2008, 03:59 PM Awesome...
Congrats on your first build!

Of the four guitars that I've built.
And no, I don't own a bass. :)
Yellow 06-27-2008, 11:59 PM And no, I don't own a bass. :)
Now, that is a problem isn't it?
Ray Holt 06-28-2008, 12:55 AM I don't see why :) I first discovered TB while searching for luthiery stuff, I came across this section. I like the community so much that I decided to join.
bradjonesbass 06-28-2008, 01:23 AM it's all good. but if you're acting as a double agent and running back to the guitards telling them what we really think of them, you'll get yours :)
Jensby design 06-28-2008, 01:48 AM And no, I don't own a bass. :)
Thats ok I guess we can just say that you play a 6-string piccolo bass :)
I have a few 6-string piccolo basses somewhere (in the closet,under the bed,I don't know where I left them):hmm: there . . . ok :hmm:
thats right I them under the coffee table to keep it level :)
I like my coffee :hyper::hyper::hyper::hyper::hyper::hyper::hyper:

oh? then what do you say to someone who has THREE instances of B on one fingerboard? ( wishful thinking.. only two right now, will be three on my next build :) )
