Why??

well because if you remember the first time you launched Win98 on your PC you were greeted with the "Welcome to windows" screen with this music....

Good lord man!!! That system sucked major @ss! It came with some many little features including the fastest blue screen time of them all.

But your point is totally valid, it was a nice little bass line when first going into Windows.

Win98 was a pretty stable platform. Windows ME was a joke. We called it the Crash-O-Matic. It take the first step of automatically looking for drivers.

In my opinion Win95 was the best for desktop. They finally had worked all the bugs out and we never had any issues with it crashing. I actually used to run Win2000 server on my Desktop system and it ran flawless. Until Microsoft comes out with a platform that is not backwards compatible with previous programs, they will never be able to fix the big security risks.

They need to design a platform that is not compatible with any Microsoft products ealier than 2003.

Apple did this and it fixed a bunch of problems they had.

A fully patched NT4 was the most stabile OS M$ ever did release, rock solid as never seen again, though not so fun if you wanted to do anything else than work (office, programming etc.) on it.

Never failed on me...

Win 2000 Pro suited my needs best. Stable, advanced networking and best interface.

Vista is absolute crap. And I only use XP because Win 2000 is no longer supported.

Never liked Linux or Unix, half the things I use aren't supported on them, and I didn't like the alternatives.

i only use vista cuz my old desktop crapped out, so I bought this cheap laptop which had vista already installed on it o_o

Vista was installed on my new laptop when I got it. After about 4 days of trying to get it working with various programs and hardware, I removed it and installed XP. It was a bit of a task (Laptop's aren't easy to install other OSs on), but it was worth it. XP is so much faster and supports many more programs.

Ya, that sound, distorted coming out of a 2" speaker. Pretty discriptive of the entire Windows experience... distorted and waiting to blow up.

Best M$ OS's:

Win 2K Professional
Win 98 SP2
Win XP Professional
DOS 6.22

Vista really isn't as bad as everyone claims it is. That doesn't mean I wouldn't have gotten XP on my laptop if I could.

YMMV, of course.

I'll take 95/98 just for the fact that if you have to reload Windows for any reason, your whole hard drive doesn't get wiped out like with XP. Haven't tried Vista yet and I don't plan on it.

I actually tried Vista Business on one of our machines at work and all I can say is, What a Dog! I put it on a Core Duo machine with 4GB of RAM and I had issues running Adobe CS3 Web Premium. Fireworks was pretty much useless, the curser would hesitate and skip. Since I use Dreamweaver and fireworks all day long, I couldn't deal with the terrible performance. Office 2003 ran great on the Vista Platform, go figure.

Yeah W2k Pro wasn't bad either, I had that from 2002 n'til the day I found my salvation in Mac OSX a cpl a years later.

Used to be a hardcore PC user now all I can say is

OSX for the win!

I've had my mac for a year and it has crashed once...before leopards first update when trying to use spaces.

I would not necessarily advocate GNU/Linux for everyone, but if you consider yourself to be tech-savvy and you're sick of Windows, it might be time to make the switch. :-)

Oh really? You must know a trick I don't, and I've been in IT for 20 years. All new Win95/98 (and up) fresh installs (NOT upgrades) will wipe out all contents of your hard drive. Speaking of upgrades, I don't recommend doing that either.

Compared to WinME at the time, Win98 was the best. WinXP is by far my favorite -- I use it at home & work. Vista will never touch our home PC.

I'll also go for Windows XP. I also remember that Windows 2000 was pretty stable OS platform for myself and the clients I had at that time at Nortel. Windows ME? That was so bad that I never met anyone that even attempted to use it.. it came, it went, now it's pretty much forgotten..:smug:

NT4 and Win2K Pro were the most robust and secure for me at the time. As for now, I've avoided Vista and will stay with XP Pro 64-bit Edition until something better is released. Windows 7 (Vienna) is supposed to be out at the end of next year, but as usual MS is surely exaggerating the release date.

ME wasn't actually released by Microsoft; it escaped on its own.

Win2K IMO was the best combination of stability and low resource usage MS ever released. XP seems just as stable (in use at work, have OS X at home), but uses twice the resources to accomplish the same thing.

Windows 98SE (the run in 2000 -- make sure the CD is dated 2000) is THE best IMO. Win95 was ok, never got exposed to ME (thankfully). Ended up with XP last year. Its not bad and I will take it or 98SE though XP has its probs.

I recently got a new laptop with VISTA. O.M.G. After 8 hours of trying to get my ISP to work on it I took it back to the rent a center and grabbed one of the 2 systems left with XP that they had. I loved the laptop that VISTA was on but no way was I going to pay $200 for the program to backdate it to XP...why should /we/ have to PAY for their mistake? Microsoft is so crooked...

your not doing it right... I've done reinstalls of XP pro leaving all data intact a few times.

I was a Mac & *nix guy exclusively until Win2K. I worked IT and supported NT3 & 4, win3.1/95/98se/Me. All y'all can keep those POS's, I'd rather watch TV & read a book before reverting back to ANY of them.

I like XP pro these days, it's a great 'turn it on and get work done' OS. If I could afford to keep up to date with Apple hardware, I'd most likely be back to a Mac.

Linux is coming along... but it is FAR from being used as a GUI bases workstation for me and my life (I admin Linux and Solaris boxes, running command line only, they are the ONLY server solution IMHO... MS should stick to workstations!!!!)

I remember when Windows 95 was launched, it was to the song "Start me up" by Rolling Stones.
Best part was the chorus: "You make a grown man cry". :D

The first time I reformatted my HD with XP I did lose everything. I realized what I did wrong and have done it a few times since and not lost anything. XP is a bit different then 98SE but as I said, I will take either one.

VISTA is the most user UNfriendly OS Ive ever had the misfortune to have to try and use.. *shudder*
