VIEW FULL LIVE VERSION : Licking 9V
6jase5 07-10-2008, 07:03 PM Anyone else lick their 9volts to see if they are dead like me? Never failed me yet. I can't taste anything anymore, but hell, at least I can tell if my battery has some juice.
(not me in picture)

WayneS 07-10-2008, 07:05 PM I confess... I'm also a battery licker!
hbarcat 07-10-2008, 09:10 PM It's foolproof.
Dave Muscato 07-10-2008, 09:13 PM Of course. That's like on Page 2 of the Gigger's Guide.
dannster 07-10-2008, 09:15 PM It changed my life!
insomniac2295 07-10-2008, 09:16 PM it never fails me. never.
ThatGermanDude 07-10-2008, 09:18 PM of course. they taste funny.
whoatherechunk 07-10-2008, 09:19 PM Supposedly after 23435 licks you can shoot out lightning bolts with your mouth.
Roadman 07-10-2008, 09:23 PM I heard you'll go blind.
Oh wait... that's the other thing.
peterbright 07-10-2008, 09:25 PM Are you telling me that you have not had electrodes implanted? A total fail man. Where is your dedication?
complexprocess 07-10-2008, 09:26 PM I've never had a need. I use a powered pedal board, so the only battery that could fail is the one in my bass. No point in testing it: if it's dead I know. :)
Mike Shevlin 07-10-2008, 09:27 PM I've got an 18v so I have to lick twice- But, it's great at parties
MellowTone 07-10-2008, 09:27 PM Yep, me too. It works and they taste funky. What else could you ask for?
burnunit 07-10-2008, 09:31 PM Just seeing this thread makes my tongue tingle.
WyrdoBass 07-10-2008, 09:36 PM oh god, now i have to go lick a 9v after hearing about this lmao... this will be interesting...
kevinmoore73 07-10-2008, 09:38 PM I've been testing 9V batteries that way for over 30 years.
Roadman 07-10-2008, 09:39 PM Hi, my name is Roadman, and I lick nine volts cuz mommy drinks and daddy never went to any of my games.
srxplayer 07-10-2008, 09:40 PM I do that all the time.
srxplayer 07-10-2008, 09:40 PM Hi, my name is Roadman, and I lick nine volts cuz mommy drinks and daddy never went to any of my games.
LMAO:D:D:D
jayarroz 07-10-2008, 11:06 PM hmmmm....now that were on the topic, what is the right amount of tinkle. when it just taste like metal....bad?? Little tingle good enough for the show. Nice zing you know its new??? Maybe I've done it to much, I can't figure out just the right amount of tingle :D
ynie92992 07-11-2008, 02:27 AM The other day my family and I were sitting around and my dad said"is that the battery from your bass?" I said yeah and he said, "so, does it have any juice?" and licked and he said "woah, that tastes funny" and then, I swear that we passed that battery to everyone in my family, my dad passed it to my sister and then my other sister refused to do it and I got it. We were laughing and compared the situation to passing around a joint or something. I don't know why I said all of that but what the hell.
Mcfunkinstein 07-11-2008, 02:29 AM i lick 9v just for fun makes me feel sexy
colorblindbass 07-11-2008, 02:30 AM haha its a chronic bassist thing,
no one i know will lick 9v's, except bass players.
rutty24 07-11-2008, 04:40 AM across the world 2 people a year die from licking 9v's.... i still do :smug:
machine gewehr 07-11-2008, 04:49 AM I have electric phobia.:hiding:
Lowbrow 07-11-2008, 04:53 AM Me? Are you kidding?
nsmar4211 07-11-2008, 07:27 AM I'm odd man (woman?) out here..... no licking batteries for me. I have an aversion to being zapped, even a little bit!!! :eyebrow:
That's when you just hand it to the nearest guitarist and give them the *eyes* and say....."Could you check this for me?" ;)
My bass is the only thing taking batteries so if I've gone so far as to open it up and take out the old one, I'm just putting a new one in... and since I don't keep half dead ones any battery in my possesion is a new one so no mixups or need to test :).
BTW I wonder who the first person to stick a battery on their tongue was...........:D
sonicvi 07-11-2008, 09:32 AM If you want some shocking good fun with electricity find yourself one of these, a Faradic Battery. It's an old quack medical device that claimed to be able to cure just about anything. It's fun to hold onto the electrodes and ramp up the current as far as you can go before either it's hurts too much or you can't let go.

varunkapahi 07-11-2008, 09:48 AM uhh i once did that to check up a battery i tell you i aint gonna do this again. i dont know you guys seem to be fine with it but it tasted terribly nasty to me.
bassman1185 07-11-2008, 10:14 AM Powered pedal board.
Passive Basses.
I don't need no steenking 9-volts.
Muusers 07-11-2008, 10:21 AM hmmmmmm, nine volts :)
svtb15 07-11-2008, 10:23 AM Of course. Have been doing it for decades and its pretty accurate to the amount of tougue curl you get as to the voltage. takes some calibrating.. haha
The funniest thing was when i caught my 4 year old nephew doing as uncle kirk did with the 9v.. the look on his face was pretty funny.. poor kid. I guess you have to watch what you do in front of kids...
rythmicillusion 07-11-2008, 10:37 AM 9 Volts could well be a "gateway battery"! After zinging enough times, you'll most likely end up busting open Camaro hoods in the parking lot outside your gig, trying to score "the juice". The only way to break the cycle after that is the electrodome clinic...
6jase5 07-11-2008, 12:23 PM I was in Mexico a few weeks ago and I swear that on a beach this old man was walking around with a little wooden box with a dial and two metal pieces that looked like guitar slides. It's a shocker box, and you pay him to hold the bars and get shocked. The amount of American takers he had was unreal and boy did they get a jolt.
I've been drunk, reeeeal drunk, but not that drunk.
wazdabaz 07-11-2008, 12:31 PM Guys just don't try this if your car won't start.
9v battery lickin' is a very old test (origins lost deep in time). I used to test batteries for my toys when I was a small boy. And then I became a bassist. So nothing is wrong with lickin 9v's ...right? huh?
laboitenoire 07-11-2008, 12:37 PM I do it on occasion. Got a nasty kick one time, though.
Elemeninki 07-11-2008, 12:37 PM Even cavemen licked 9v batteries. It's that old.
I like attaching the batteries to various metal objects and watching the electricity jump :D
Has anyone got a method of testing AAs?
Revmizery 07-11-2008, 12:41 PM Used to batteries that way. Now I don't think it would be a good idea to test my PP2 that way to see if its on.
mkandolf 07-11-2008, 12:49 PM across the world 2 people a year die from licking 9v's.... i still do :smug:
Guess nobody told them not to swallow!
megadan 07-11-2008, 12:52 PM I'm too much of a wuse to do it, I've never tried.
bassman1185 07-11-2008, 12:52 PM Oh, fun related story...
I work as a rental tech at an A/V company. We rent out a lot of wireless mics, and we are supposed to replace the batteries in them when they come back regardless of whether or not the battery still works. We keep all the good used batteries in a box. Before I worked here, one guy lined up several DOZEN 9-volts positive to negative and touched the ends to see what would happen. Now, keep in mind that this is a bigger guy (I'd say in the 250ish pound range). Anyway, the shock knocked him on his butt while every else was laughing at him.
Rick Auricchio 07-11-2008, 01:21 PM Totally silly. I've never licked a 9v battery. Doing so won't tell you a thing about the battery's condition except if it's completely dead.
That said, I keep all used batteries from smoke detectors (I have six of them) to use in my tuner. If a battery dies, I have one or two more used ones in my gig bag. And even if I didn't have a spare, the tuner is somewhat expendable at a gig.
Note: I always mark used batteries so I can tell 'em from new ones. When stored in a bag, the contacts are protected with masking tape.
VisualShock 07-11-2008, 01:52 PM Uhm...guys
hate to spoil your fun (and it is fun, I've tried :>) but because there are no resistors, or diodes in your tongue, the electricity flies straight through, and wears the battery out sooner, so the less time you spend licking it the better it will be
Moral of the story:
if you're gonna lick, do it quick :P
dreadheadbass 07-11-2008, 02:14 PM you guys are all doing it the hard way the easy way of doing it is to smear peanut butter on the end of it and get a dog to lick it... if his ears twitch its got charge:smug:
Elemeninki 07-11-2008, 02:17 PM you guys are all doing it the hard way the easy way of doing it is to smear peanut butter on the end of it and get a dog to lick it... if his ears twitch its got charge:smug:
:D
Bassenstien 07-11-2008, 02:18 PM Ive been doing this for years, didnt know I was testing anything though.
Inflin 07-11-2008, 02:20 PM I was always taught never to short out a battery because they can explode .
However, a couple of times now, I've had the end of my bass lead in my mouth, while rooting around a gig bag for my modded double muff, and then absent mindedly plugging it in and switching it on to test it. Tingly 18v surprise
Brittain 07-11-2008, 02:30 PM Has anyone got a method of testing AAs?
You need a pretty long tongue, man.
zeppelinfreak 07-12-2008, 01:03 AM Is it just me, or does the...um...the.......dont certain parts of a women taste like a battery sometimes? Or is that just me.
And on topic, yes
Dave Muscato 07-12-2008, 01:07 AM Zep, that's entirely inappropriate for Talkbass... please remove it! Thanks.
BullHorn 07-12-2008, 03:55 AM I did it for the first time yesterday. I like.
username n/a 07-12-2008, 04:43 AM I did it for the first time yesterday. I like.

They certainly did in the Stepford Wives.
Inflin 07-13-2008, 06:39 AM They certainly did in the Stepford Wives.
ZZZZING!
SelenaBassGirl 07-13-2008, 10:47 PM heck no! I get my hubby to lick em for me! hehe! I handed him one the other day and it was new! I about died laughing at his face expression!
cheesemonkey 07-14-2008, 12:01 AM i have
Geezerman 07-14-2008, 12:29 AM Isn't this why you guys have kids?
Brittain 07-14-2008, 10:36 AM Isn't this why you guys have kids?
Depends on the voltage of the battery, it could directly be the reason why they DON'T have kids.
After all, with a strong enough voltage somethings gonna get fried.
Psychbass 07-14-2008, 10:47 AM I used to lick my 9 volts all the time to check them. Tingly, tastes like a lemon soaked in copper.
However, I was taking a class in biofeedback and we were learning about surface electromyography sensors (which provide a direct path for electrical current from the skin, and can thus provide a danger). Anyway, my teacher told me that when he was a student, a guy in his electrical engineering class unintentionally killed himself in class with a 9 volt and two thumb tacks. They were talking about how it would work in class and the student decided to test the theory. He attached the thumb tacks to the battery contacts and then pierced his tongue with the two thumb tacks. Zap... his heart stopped and they couldn't restart it.
While I was never able to find direct verfication that this story was true, I don't lick 9 volts anymore and I'm really careful with the sEMG sensors now. :-)

onlyclave 07-14-2008, 10:50 AM How many licks does it take to get to the center of a 9V battery?
Mr. Owl?
Bardley 07-14-2008, 10:54 AM I do lick the battery. It does work.
I did find out some years back why they say on the battery "Do not carry loose in pocket", though. I had forgotten and dropped one in my pocket while I was carrying something and hopped in the car and took off. a few minutes later I felt a burning sensation on my leg. I suddenly remembered and started digging in my pocket. The thing was red hot and I couldn't really grab it. I just kind of flipped it out of my pocket and out the car window all while driving down the highway. Needless to say, I have NEVER carried a 9v in my pocket since.
BassChuck 07-14-2008, 01:00 PM I lick them.... but it makes my farts smell funny.
SelenaBassGirl 07-22-2008, 07:05 PM I just put the battery in an item and then see if something works..
ummm what ever happened to the battery tester machines or the batteries that you push the ends and it shows the amt. of power in it????
Elrend 07-22-2008, 07:26 PM Yes i do, and i find it highly erotic
Dave R 07-23-2008, 06:12 PM oh god, now i have to go lick a 9v after hearing about this lmao... this will be interesting...Its not so much a "lick", its more like, plant your tongue on the electrodes and see how it feels. Give it time for the pain (er, I mean the tingle) to develop.
