I don't know whats worse, the extremely bad timing, the horrible bass-less tone, the wrong tuning, the wrong notes, or the two Slipknot posters on the wall (;) just playing, Slipknot are ok). I actually started to laugh when I watched this clip. Maybe I'm just mean?

I hope the poor kid isn't on TB... and if he is I hope he doesn't see this thread. :ninja:

Well yeah the tuning is wrong and his tone is absolutely horrible. But for a beginner his playing isn't all that bad.

Wasn't that the VanHalen kid? He's getting better. Maybe the tab didn't include the proper tuning....ever think about that Mr.Critical??

Keep on rocking Dude, perhaps with a metronome.

Even as a beginner, it's pretty easy to tell what is in tune and what isn't.

Not always. Some people have a hard time recognizing pitch and it takes some time to develop it.

I'm a drummer as well and I know young drummers who can't tell the difference between what drum is being hit (snare, bass, toms etc..) on a recording.

Pity.

That's what I feel,

Pity.

I know I was that bad once, and wanted sorely to believe otherwise, but never displayed my crappiness for all to see unless seeking advice. If that is what he is doing, good for him. Otherwise.....

Pity.

I hope he overcomes, and helps other crappy bassists recognize the need for hard work and humility.

Thunderthumbs73

Well, let's put it this way, if he's still playing this way a year from now with no notable improvement, then there might be a little problem. Maybe hearing a little RATM, Rush, Yes or something with some good trebly bass tones in good songs might be inspirational and help him in the right direction...

Honestly I applaud him for keeping up bass. I strongly feel that playing an instrument is about having fun and rocking out, not being good. He's got tonnes of videos, and seems to be enjoying himself, so good on him.

Why is everyone making so much fun of this guy?

He seems eager enough to learn.
(As Top Gear would say: ) ambitious but rubbish.
I like that in a man (or woman...).

The 5 Minutes Alone Play along: off course it sounds like crap, because the bassline on it's own is strange. He should've turned up the song louder.

Okay his timing was off. That's natural if you are a newbie and immediatly start playing metal. I've been there.
And I agree that he should get a tuner. D & G string were terribly out of tune.

I've seen another vid of him trying to play The Trooper from Iron Maiden. He is ambitious to learn the galloping technique from Steve Harris.
If hypotheticly this guy asked me to teach him a few stuff I would gladly. He has the right spirit and he doesn't seem to be giving up,... according to several videos he posted.
(I'd probably start with teaching him beats, metronome and pace.)

This guy should be reached out to by this bassist community.
Someone should invite him to TB.

For some people it takes time to be good at an instrument. I know a guitarist who was more rubbish than this guy on YouTube. But after 5 years he became a fairly decent guys to play with.

I do agree on one thing. If I was still in this kind of newbee stage I wouldn't post videos of myself playing. Unless if it were for asking tips and advice.

I agree strongly! It appears as though he is spending time working on his playing rather than going onto TB and bashing others for their efforts! He is definitely enjoying himself and having fun and most of all he is making music. There seems to be too many TB'ers that like to bash the beginners. I guess it makes them feel better about themselves.

Geez, tough crowd for the kids! Although I question the wisdom of putting some of the stuff I've seen up on TB, hey, we all sucked at one point in our lives. Still, if you're going to put yourself out there, I guess you need to learn how to read bad reviews of yourself and not kill yourself.

i think, that if he had a tuner, he would just sound bad. but it would be a big step up- he would sound bad like a new player who's never had a teacher/structured practice.
i mean, his rhythm, and notes and timing are hit and miss, since maybe he's trying to play stuff that's beyond his range, but there's no reason to be that out of tune...
