Hey Lynn, it's Tate from the aebersold camp, i took a lesson with you.

I was wondering if you could clarify some things about the right hand technique. I was confused on if you are supposed to move your arm ( not your wrist) or not, to get a good sound. I remember you telling me to not move my arm, but i'm not sure if you were just trying to get me to work on the wave thing and get to the arm later. I saw rufus talking and he talked about moving the arm to get a big sound.

This might be difficult to explain over the internet but it would be a great help.

Hi Tate,
Yes, it is very difficult to follow up via the internet on what we talked about in person. Yes, arm movement as Rufus Reid talks about is also a part of producing sound. What I was working on with you was to stop the wrist bouncing which can waste energy that could go into the hand/fingers. For a great example, go to www.youtube.com and type in the search Mingus Mingus Mingus (yes three times). It has a great shots of Mingus' right hand walking and soloing mostly with the meat of the first finger. Yes, his wrist bounces A LITTLE sometimes, but not like you were doing.
