Hey so the guys i jam with regularly, we like to choose one chord and base a long jam usually twenty minutes to forty five (longest we've done) and then add in little movements like minor II-V-I's I-IV-V or the other weird ones i forget. Anyway we usually do it all in Amin or Gmin and occasionally D7. So i was wondering if anyone had some favorite chords that are trippy and then recommendations as to where i should take those jams from the chords.
I just watched a video of ALTERED and their guitarists solos are cool like epic stories, and i want to work on those solos that i can start with an idea and stretch it out rather than little slap funk fills or quick riff changes, because although I'm pretty good at creating new lines in jams and changing them, i want to improve my solos and do them like Altered does.

I have been playing around with slap lines over locrian recently and it sounds just like what the op is describing...

Establish the groove in whatever chord and then play in the corresponding modes.
Thats where all the good Harmony is at.

I am jealous that your band knows music theory and can base the music you create off of it. I know lots of theory but my guitarist knows none, so when we jam he just plays whatever and I am stuck choosing a random key to play in since my ears aren't developed enough to pick it up.

Our band goes off on those one chord jams alot too....Mostly the keyboardist drummer and me. The keyboardist knows the most technically. I probably am more like Poor Tom's Guitarist. I don't know jack about theory but I feel I have a good ear. But as far as helping you with chords I mostly do octaves and fifths when not playing single notes.
