Bonehead question:
I have a multitester, and I really *don't* know how to use it effectively.
What setting do I use to test the output of a bass (passive vs. preamp, etc)?
Not utterly necessary to do, but I'm curious.
Thanks!

You can only test a pickup to read its DC resistance. You would have it set on the resistance setting and either auto range, or in the kilo (K) range.
You can't test out active pickups, since they have a preamp between the coils and your meter. For pickups attached to a preamp, you either need to disconnect the pickup from the preamp, or take a reading at some point like a blend or volume pot, but keep in mind it will throw the reading off. But it can be useful to see if you have an open circuit.
DC resistance isn't the most useful reading on a pickup, since different gauges of wire have a difference resistance per foot. So the same number of turns with thinner wire will give a higher reading, but wont be a hotter pickup, but it will be brighter.

Thanks for the reply. That makes sense.
Hey, how's the Osage Orange bass coming?
