Greg Macainsh (sp?) from Skyhooks. Most of their songs were heavily dependent on the melodic bassline. Most are fairly easy but are a vital part of the song.

I'd start looking at John Butler Trio. Probably of the prominent aussie artists they're a group that has a great bass player. Whether its assessment piece good i dont know. Let us know what you decide!

Not necessarily super hard, but very interesting grooving basslines that are vital
Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds - Do You Love Me?
Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds - Red Right Hand
Nick cave and The Bad Seeds - Dig, Lazarus, Dig!
Pete Murray - Tonic
The Vines - Factory
The Vines - Outtathaway!
John Butler Trio - Zebra
John Butler Trio - Treat Yo Mamma
John Butler Trio - There'll Come A Time (if you nailed the quick semi-quavers cleanly you'd probablly get a good mark for chops too)

Try a track off Tommy Emmanuel's Determination CD. Rob Little on bass for most of the tracks I think.

try Evripedes Evripedou! Traditionally a flamenco guitarist. Plays 6 string basses and also has a 7 string custom made Belman.
LRB even; Roger McLaughlin on bass.
Correct me if I'm wrong but Ric Fierabracci might be Aussie?

Yuri Pavlinov, The Bamboos.
One of my favorite funk bass lines is off My Baby's Cheating if you can get a copy of Rawville.

Maybe listen to Step It Up or The Bamboos Theme off their site to give you an idea.
Or there's always Tal Wilkenfeld... That should be hard enough ;)

Craig Bloxom from Spy V. Spy. The Spies were a trio that played some really kickin' Rock n Roll back in the '80's & early 90's. They gained quite a rep as a great club band that would totally rock the joint every night.
Albums: "A.O Mod. TV Ver." & "Harry's Reasons" are 2 of my all-time favorite albums. Great tracks, with killer driving bass throughout.
Songs: If you're looking for something interesting and driving, listen to "A.O. Mod" off the Xenophobia (Why?) album.
Truly underrated everywhere except Australia. I still listen to them almost daily.

Didn't he play with James Morrison? I recall seeing a name like that...

i'd definately reccommend some of the living end's earlier stuff... theres some great lines there... umm also the bassist from Hunters and Collectors... check out their stuff such as When the river runs dry... umm the DiVINyls also have some great lines...also..what type of exam is it? uni or school? ... why not check out some of the great australian jazz quartets? analyse a walking line... ??? play the head, followed by a walking line, solo then back to the head??? With conservatoriums such as WAAPA all around the counrty there are plenty of virtuoso players on our rich jazz scene.. hit it up!

Sean Fonti when he played with Massappeal did a track called "Chrysalidz".
Interesting bassline with plenty of tricky bits and if you can nail the funky slappin bridge in the middle, you will blow the minds of your assessors!

I've got an album called "Cloudfaces" by a bassist called Wayne Davies. I picked it up in the UK from the guy who played drums on it, so I don't actually know what level of acclaim he reached but the playing was pretty awesome.

Helen Carter (Do Re Mi) was the reason I started playing bass in the first place. "Man Overboard" has a nice (if not particularly difficult) bass part, as does "Adultery", "Guns and Butter", "Idiot Grin" and "Deep Blue Sea".
I'm sure there are Do Re Mi clips on You Tube that you could check out. :)

Good call. Helen's a very, very good bassist and added some growl to Do Re Mi's smooth sound. Adultery is one of my all-time favorites.

Quite unusual too, compared to other songs from the same time (mid 80's, wasn't it?). Its bass line really stands out!

My suggestions-
Bob Daisley (early Ozzy Osbourne band): this guy practically wrote all the songs, including lyrics, for Ozzy during the Randy Rhoads days. In terms of hard rock/metal stuff, Bob is a great plectrum player who lets the guitarist be the hero (which is what guitarists want to be, right?).
Greg Macainsh (Skyhooks): I know Greg, played in a band managed by him and used a bass he very generously lent me for a period (pre-Ernie Ball Stingray, heavy heavy bass). Greg wrote the Skyhooks megahits; he rewrote the book for Australian pop music in the 70s and is a much better bass player than the Skyhooks tracks would lead you to believe. Very clever guy and a hero to anyone who aspires to write a 'classic' song.
Flea- (he is an Aussie, yeah?)
Stephen Hadley- (Loose Change shred-jazz band from Melbourne). I only ever heard them, never saw them, but **** he can play. Blistering runs in unison with guitar.
John Archer- (Hunters and Collectors): Check out the early Hunnas track 'Talking to a Stranger' on YouTube, before they went all pub-anthem-rock. This is from 1982, when everyone else had synth-bass programmed lines; John Archer's line is years ahead of it's time in terms of sound and direction.
