Hi Todd,

I've probably watched your Unit 7 video (Youtube) with Ron Eschete about a million times. Can't get enough of it. I'm starting to look at playing Unit 7 in our weekly Sunday afternoon jam sessions. You playing some wonderful chord changes the last 4 bars of the A section that seem to be slightly different than what I have written on my charts, so I thought I'd ask the following;

1) What are the chord changes you're playing in the video on those last 4 bars?

2) Your approach to the walking bass lines over those changes?

I'm watching you play it while I'm typing this. Incredible!

Thanks in advance,

Lawrie

Hi Lawrie,

Wow...cool. I forgot about that tune....and...thanks for the kind words.

The last 4 bars of the A section.....Hmmm....if memory serves..... I "think" I'm playing || Abma7 Dbma7| Dmi7 G7| C7 A7| D7 G7||

I really like the Abma7 to Dbma7.....just my own personal taste, plus it really works well with the melody.

My approach to playing walking bass lines?? Nothing secret there...I'm playing the root of the chord on the downbeat then "probably" playing a leading tone above or below the next root. Make sense??? The simple stuff almost ALWAYS works the best.

THE best way for you to know for sure is to transcribe what I do.....and by that I mean to learn to play what I play....don't worry about writing it down......and....don't worry about playing the chords like I do....just get the roots.

When you do, let me know what you discover. Fair enough??

Have fun with it. That's a great tune.

Hi Todd,

That's great. I've played with those changes for a while now and see why your like the Abma7 to Dbma7. It does follow the melody line nicely. I don't have too many problems with walking bass lines over a blues and and/or ii-V's. I think it's maintaining the rhythm,timing, and a flowing bass line over the Abma7 Dbma7 then to the ii-V. Targeting the root and the lead tone will help.

Thanks so much. I'll certainly let you know how it goes.
