ok wow..i have met so many bassist posers over the years..its ridiculous...

for instance, i was at my local guitar shop, checkin out teh 5string fretless' and i started talking with the owner, and he tells me about how some guys come in after playing bass on guitar hero, thinking they can play bass.

O.O was the only face i could make....

thats crazy..guitar hero (as much as i love the game) has really lowered the standards of bassists

so really..random guys, who do well on a video game, all of a sudden think they can b musicians? bassists? guitarists?

so, i kick a lotta butt on halo..so that means i can become in intergallactic super space soldier? no...some of these guys..need 2 b sat down and given a stern talking 2, or at least a slap on the hand....

maybe if guitar her really grasped the awesome power of the bass, then MAYBE people can learn from it, but until then, posers are just think bass is the easiest simplest instrument in the world

I don't know of anyone who thinks that because they play with RockBand or Guitar Hero that they instantly know how to be a player. That said I do know of several people who after playing those games decide to pickup a real instrument and give it a whirl...and that, in my opinion, is a really good thing. :)

There is a commercial for the Wii thing. they have them programmed to make the sounds of many different instruments.

The girl in the ad after playing one says " I always wanted to be a musician".

I've never touched one but It looks like you just shake the thing to get different tones. I wouldn't be suprised to see someone start up a band playing only these things.

The video speeds up at weird points when they start playing the song when I watched it. It's not supposed to do that.

There's no need to be a hater. I'm sure we all have our reasons for picking up instruments, and I'm sure that the stories you hear get embellished a little. Sure there's some dudes who think they're all that when they pick up a guitar because they've played Guitar Hero, but there's a lot of people who really want to learn an instrument as a direct result of playing the game. Sure a lot of them end up quitting after a short period of time, but there's some who stick with it. When Ramones came out tons of kids picked up an instrument and started a band because their stuff was so simple. Was that a good thing? Some may disagree, but I think it was a good thing.

My boss has been after me to give him guitar lessons for over a year (I play a little guitar and we were friends since before he was my boss). He's got all the Rock Band and Guitar Hero releases and plays them almost daily... he's stopped asking about lessons since now he has a sense of playing / performing from the game.

Not sure what I think of the issue... but I'm sure it'll keep some people from playing that aren't really musically inclined. Maybe it will inspire those with music talent to actually start playing.

I think it's great! These folks will buy instruments, play them for a few months, get bored and then offer them up for sale at a significantly lower price than retail!
It's a win win for those of us who play!:bassist:

So there are people out there that are actually in the school of thought that seeing as they've become proficient with a guitar hero controller, they are by default six-string virtuosos?

I don't really think I know anyone who is that retarded...

Sir, not reading the comments on Youtube is the reason why I myself am NOT retarded... I'm merely an idiot-savant. :D

I have had the same experience as you when it comes to Rock Band and Guitar Hero. I also think it's great that it has inspired some people to learn an instrument or a new instrument and even if most of the people quit the real instruments, atleast there will be some that will actually become musicians. The ones who quit will probably gain a new respect for people that actually do play too.

For the people that actually believe that they are musicians (or rock gods) because they are good at the games, well that's just hilarious.

Back when I was in high school, there was a dude who was as big of a bass poser as they come.

He would always be playing 'air bass' and rocking out to some non-existent music trying to look cool.

Somehow he made it into the jazz band, so there were two bassists (him and myself). I worked hard at learning the charts and playing in time, but he would ruin it because he would just be looking at my fretting hand and be following what I was playing, a second behind me. I used to turn his amp down when he wasn't looking to help the rhythm section stay together. He usually didn't notice...

He would always talk about how great of a bass player he was and how he played with other famous musicians.

One day, he brought in a CCR record (that's right, an LP) and claimed he had recorded the bass tracks on it. When I pointed out that his name was nowhere on the credits, he said it was because he was too young to be given credit, so they put his uncle's name on the album.
:eyebrow:

I think back to this guy and I crack up. I have no idea what he's up to (although I might go look him up on Facebook).

This is just the same thing that skaters were dealing with back in '99 when Tony Hawk and it's imitators were popular. It gives some people an interest in really learning about the subject of the game. However, it also gives some overconfident pricks the impression that real life is just like a videogame. Ignore the later group and they'll go away soon enough.

I think that if you already play bass or guitar Guitar Hero and Rock Band could probably help shore up your timing a little bit and maybe get you some stamina/dexterity practice... which is good... and yeah, if you don't already play maybe it'll get you into music, which is also cool... I don't know - I think those games are fun.:hiding:

I actually don't play any video games anymore - once I calculated how much time I spent on the Damn things - I freaked out and Ran over my X-box with my Blazer.
I can't say that they are bad for everyone, just that they are bad for me.
I laugh at POSERS, so I guess they are a good thing.

I suck pretty bad at Rock Band, timing isn't helped because you just look at the little dot to know when to "play" Plus, I always miss the appropriate colored button because I am looking to play the notes like on a real bass and overshoot. Oh well.

It's fun to hang around and make a fool of myself with my friends, but it doesn't help my playing at all.

That's funny.
I read an interview w/ Valeri Bertinelli in People, OK or one of those celeb gossip magazines. She stated that Eddie Van Halen actually REALLY sucks at Guitar Hero!

Agreed, my muscle and mental memory make me completely mess me up on those games. I'm terrible at them. It's like playing a minor 2nd and hearing a perfect 5th... just doesn't add up in my head and I usually bomb on anything but easy. (Where I can sit and see what to play and think about it first....)

Though I do agree that they're fun to wail at while drinking with a few friends. If it inspires someone to pick up an instrument, more power to them.

Also, I saw that Wii commercial too and have no idea how that could be anything but Wario Ware with musical instruments. "Do the violin!" :rollno:

I hate the people that say something like;

"Why would you spend thousands of dollars buying a guitar when you could play this game? I can totally play this song hell good ey. I think im a natural at guitar ey."

" i think im a natural guitar player" argh.. amount of guitar hero freaks i have heard say that... i am awful at anything like that even though the drums on rockband are good for timeing

i don't have a problem with the game at all... although i agree that some of its users can be a little cocky over it

but i have to second (or third) the notion that its good that it brings people to try to play for real. i myself re-picked up the bass cuz one day i was playing guitar hero and thought "what the hell am i doing.. with the amount of time i play this i could actually just go back to playing the bass"

haven't played it in about a year, theres just no reason to. my roomate asked me if i wanted to go halfsies on the new rockband when it came out, my response to her: "why would i want to pretend to play when i actually can??"

i would suck anyway, i was in best buy the other week and i played one song (white wedding) and was sooo confused... just seems so unnatural.

Games are games. Music is music.

If those games make some people really try and learn an instrument - that's great. But the posing... urgh. I guess it's just a matter of personal features. Such as intelligence ;)

Anyway, I have yet to play those games... But I don't have the time. I'd rather spend it playing my Jazz Bass ;)
