My ideal bass sound is the bass on 'call me Al' (Paul Simon).

Do you guys have any advice on what equipment exists to help me reproducing a similar sound, ideally live (e.g. ideal amp/guitar/compressor/chorus etc)?

Any ideas are much apprechiated.

cheers,

Rob

From Wikepedia:
'The song features an impressive and unusual bass run performed by Bakithi Kumalo, in which the second half is a reversed recording of the first half. The bass solo was recorded on Kumalo's birthday.'

Keep in mind that most of the sound comes from his fingers and his playing style.
Here's an interview with the master himself (includes the kind of strings he uses):

One of the things he Bakithi says: 'I approach the bass as a member of the drum family.'

Well...there's your answer!!

My 2 cents.... As with all players.....95% of the sound is in your hands. True story!!
