VIEW FULL LIVE VERSION : Chicago: fully carved smaller DB

I have a second DB for sale. This one is a fully carved, Romanian, DB with a 40" string length. You could call it a large 1/2 size, a 5/8ths, or a small 3/4.

The bass is about 15 - 20 years old and was part of the "old stock" at Ideal Music in NYC. I bought it in mid-2007 and luthier Mark Sonksen did the set-up and upgrades. He carved a new bridge with adjusters, replaced the tailpiece wire and endpin, carved a new nut, and dressed the fingerboard. New Flexocore strings were also installed. This bass will not overpower a large 7/8ths orchestral giant but the deep ribs give it a very decent sound for a smaller bass.

The bass comes with a new Mooradian bag.

I am asking $2,400 US.

The bass is available for a test-drive in Chicago. I am not able to ship but will assist you in making shipping arrangements to the best of my ability.

Please PM me for more details. Thanks for looking.

Pics will come. The wx should be warm enough tommorow and allow me to take it out on the balcony for better lighting.

Roses are red,
but this bass is blue,
'cause it's cooped up in a bag,
and not being played by you.

Is this bass a Enesco from Ideal or is it a Roma???

Is this bass a Enesco from Ideal or is it a Roma???

I'm pretty sure it's a Roma. My vision is not that great and I can't see inside well enough to read the label. If I remember correctly, my luthier looked and just saw the Ideal label - I think "Roma" was one ofeir house brands. It's certainly Romanian and fully carved. The Ernesco name never came up in my communications with Steve.

I don't think its a Roma - the f-holes are closer to the centre and more slanted than the Roma effs on my 3/4.

I sent Steve Loeb an e-mail asking if he could pin down the maker for me. I suspect that the actual name is somewhat irrelevant as these basses generally come from one of two or three factories in Reghin. This is certainly one of those factory basses. It's still a decent bass nonetheless.

I agree - I'm sorry, I didn't mean to make your bass sound as though it wasn't a good one; I just got caught up in the details. :)

No worries, Jake. I'm one of these guys that also likes to know all the details and have done everything I could to identify the parentage of my instruments. Unfortunately, as seen by all the "Help me identify this bass" threads we see on TB, that's not always possible. Seen any good DBs made by John Juzek lately??

Nope! Its all about how it sounds anyway, whatever the supposed provenance.

Yes indeed, it's all about the sound. I did get a reply from Steve stating that my bass is a Roma.

Cue Maury Povich: "Roma! You ARE the father!!!"

As someone wanting to get started in DB playing Blues, Jazz, and accualy use it in the christan praise band. I know nothing so forgive my basic question but would this "smaller" db work and mic ok?

Thanks

Dano,

I sent you a PM.

Yes, I do think it would work fine for the uses you mentioned, buy I would change the strings to Spiros, Evahs, or another jazz/pizz/hybrid string.

Your bass is beautiful. As I said I am new at this and only been playing electric bass for a few months.
How much would string cost? I have TI flatwounds on my MTD and I love em.
What would a picup cost? I have thought about just switching to standup alltogether.

Thanks
Dano

One thing you learn quick in the DB world is that strings are not cheap, especially compared to those for guitars. A set of spiros goes for $170 at Quinn Violins (on-line in MN, good prices and service) and a set of Helicore Hybrids is about $120

I don't play plugged-in so I'm not the best person to advise on electronics. Check the "Amps" section here for more info.

Time for a bump.

Please note: the Barrister will be off-line from 9/02 through 9/16. This means that if you decide you JUST GOT TO HAVE THIS BASS during that time frame, you are SOL. So, contact me now and make an offer.

Cheers

Is there anyway to ship to CA? Not sure if it's even possible.

Thanks

I could check with a couple of thestring shops around here to see if they could do it and what it would cost. I know that my luthier won't ship anything. If you can rent a flight case and have it shipped out, I'd be able to pack the bass. Unfortunately, it would have to be a carrier that handles residential deliveries because I don't have wheels and most of the freight terminals are near the airports.

Ok I'll see what I can come up with. May be more hassle and $$ than it's worth.

Thanks
