Saw the thread for MOST covered, and thought this would be a good way to get us all thinking...and I'm not just suggesting tunes where we can jump up and down on our monitors w/ our heads back while we FUNK either

There's a few tunes I've heard that just have a "riff" that just works...

Fool for Your Stockings (ZZ Top)
Sail on Sailor (Beach Boys)(But imagine it w/ a Blues feel???)

I've never heard anyone cover "Manic Mechanic" by ZZ Top. I love that song! Also, "The Ocean", by Zep.

I never hear any versions of Buffalo Springfeild's "For What It's Worth"

I've always wanted to do this with a band of mine, but no one ever bites: the "Doctor Who" theme song from the Tom Baker years. Synthy weirdness and driving, gallopping bass!

Good point on "The Ocean"...

I would still love to see covers of "Paranoid Android" (radiohead) or "A day in the Life"...hmm, i'll have to talk to my band about that...

I could never get any of my bandmates to do "Jessie's Girl," even though it's pretty easy and a definite babe-getter.

How about "Kokomo," by The Beach Boys?

lushfreak

Gordon Lightfoot's "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" is just screaming for a genre-bending cover, methinks.

Jessies Girl! that is a good good song... that rick springfield...... i would like to do "we built this city" i think that song is by starship?

LiquidMidnight

Jesse's Girl would be a great ole' song to cover. My band use to cover 867-5309 (Jenny) and people use to go nuts when our guitarist broke into that opening riff.

I agree about the Beach Boys stuff, but your band better have some top notch harmonies going on to do that. I did see a band once that covered some Beach Boys and did it well.

There's a great cover band in Seattle called "Herding Cats" that does the theme to the Muppet Show. It rules. :D

The Beatniks, another Seattle cover band, does a completely and utterly amazing version of "A Day in the Life"; and I'm super-critical of anyone covering the Beatles.

the "Doctor Who" theme song from the Tom Baker years

One of my long lost bands used this as our opening tape. Cool song - especially if you're a fan of the show like I was! One song that you don't hear much, but I think my band is going to do it is "Sultans of Swing" from Dire Straits.

Frank Zappa has made a wonderfull ska kind of cover of that song. It can be found on "Best band you never heard in your life". It's the last song on disc 2.
The whole brass section plays the solo.:D

Incredible isn't it?
I have a friend that thinks Page is the best guitar player that lived, lives. He always went off about how only he could play stairway and do it justice.
Frankley he was quite upset when I played that track for him. They nail it.

Actually, it has already been done. A Fargo band redid the song, changed some lyrics around, made it heavier while still retaining the same melody. It sounds really cool. I wish there was a way I could send you a copy of it.

Shackman,

I've been trying to find that for months! I heard a bit of it on NPR and have been searching ever since. Thanks!

Hang On St. Christopher by Tom Waits should definitely be covered by somebody. Or Who Could it Be Now by Men at Work.
A band I was in did a surf/punk version of Neil Diamond's Solitary Man.

I'm going to do a stripped down blues version of "Paid my dues" by Anastacia for my choir. Me on bass, a friend of mine on guitar, a singer with both of us doing backup harmonies. At least it will be fun to see who can guess what song we're playing. :D

Seriously, I think it could be an amazing blues song.

The Theme from "The Munsters" There are some other 60s' and 70s' TV themes that had some great bass lines. Just wish I could remeber of some of them.
I would love to cover "The Real Me" (The Who) but can't seem to get any one else to cooperate. Not even on "My Generation" either.

Good call on "Sail On Sailor" by the first poster...my band has been doing it, by the way.

My picks:

"Dragon Attack" by Queen
"Driven To Tears" by The Police

Also...the "Captain Scarlet Theme" from the TV show of the same name.
