+1 for "Give Blood"

Other great Pino Palladino lines:
"Stop on By" by Paul Young, featuring Chaka Khan on vocals
"In a New York Minute" by Don Henley (the song itself is a little cheesy, but great work by PP)

That's the one bassline that slapped me in the face and made me take notice of what a fretless can do.

BTW, Bakithi Kumalo has a couple of pages in the latest Bass Player magazine. Good interview.

Used to be my favorite song back in the day and hadn't heard it in almost 20 years. After listening to it a few weeks ago it completely realigned my brain on what can be done on a fretless. Needless to say I've got a major case of GAS and saving my pennies for a Squier VM F. :)

didn't realise so many pearl jam songs had fretless,...

elderly woman behind the counter in a small town has always been one of my favourite songs! was awesome when they played that live too! :bassist:

its kind of funny, almost all my favourite bass players seem to play the gary willis basses,... maybe its a sign I need to get one :bassist: :D

(currently going through all of spiral architect's album,... from the start of spinning that bass just hits through the mix and makes me drool!!!)

Wow, lots of tunes I would've mentioned already have been!

Here's one that hasn't: "Adidas In Heat" by Adrian Belew, featuring J.Clifton Mayhugh on fretless bass. Freakin' amazing line, further enhanced by Clif's fabulously punchy fat incisive tone.

Also: "Energy Fools The Magician" by Brian Eno, fretless bass by Percy Jones. 'nuf said.

And: "Faceblaster" from Alphonso Johnson's Spellbound album.

Well, Pino's work with Paul Young and Don Henley's already on here, as is Jaco's stuff wtih both WR and that blonde lady from Canada with the high cheek bones and the wonderful sense of artistry in everything she does....

So, here's a less common one that really defines what fretless should be about for me.

Freebo on the early Bonnie Raitt stuff. Back in the '70s, before Don Was was, and the relatively mass appeal, it was Bonnie, Freebo, and a few friends. Check out "Too Long At The Fair"- just Bonnie and Freebo. Dig how he cradles the lyrics in his bass and imparts just the exact amount of wistfullness with his judiciously used slides. Then dig into the supreme funk (old funk not Fieldy abused stuff) of "Girl, You've Been In Love Too Long". See how he only lets you know it's fretless when he wants you to know? Utter genius there!! He's the FIRST fretless bassist I ever heard of or knew was playing fretless electric and he's still the voice that keeps me on target for playing fretless.

Speaking of early fretless players- how 'bout some Bill Wyman? I'm convinced that "Jumpin' Jack Flash" is his butchered cheapy bass he made fretless because the frets were in such terrible shape.
