I was just handed a pair of jazz bass pickups from my guitard player. I asked him wich one was the bridge and neck. he didnt know. He said it doesnt matter. but that doesnt seem right to me. so does it matter? and if so how do tell them apart?

On a Jazz bass, due to the taper from nut to bridge, the bridge pickup is a quarter inch wider than the neck pickup.

Some sets are the same length. In that case, I think you can use a multimeter and measure capacitance. If there is a difference, the higher one is the bridge pickup. Or do I have it backwards?
Step 1 - are they the same size?
Step 2 - measure their capacitance
Step 3 - Wait for someone who knows for sure to tell you which is which based on capacitance.
