I seem to be stuck in a rut when it comes to bass playing. I'm not really progressing like I was before. What are some things I should practice or do? I thought about learning harder more complicated song like Zepplin, Rush, or maybe some Jazz line, or should I try writing some new things? :bassist:

Studying with a good teacher is great for situations like this....

If you can't read music, this would be a good time to start!

One thing I like to do if I'm in this kind of situation is to step down a bit and focus on some easier songs. By doing so I focus on my tone and timing and just let the tech stuff sit for a while - you'll see, after a little break things will start to roll again ;)

What kind of practice exercises do you do? I used to do more rehearsing and learning songs than actual practice. A very wise teacher pointed out some inadequacies in my tecnique. I've since been doing very rote excercises, concentrating on the things he showed me. Anyway, I was at a stagnant stage of my learning, and this helped. I also began studying theory and ear training. If I were you (and I have felt the exact same way as you do) I would step back, figure out what you are trying to do with the bass (goals), acess your abilities and weaknesses, and work on areas you need it the most. How well do you know the fretboard? One thing I did was make flashcards with notes on one side (say A) and string/ fret #s on the back ( E-5, 17 A- Open-12 etc.). Many bassists (like me) do not have a mastery of the fretboard, but we all should!

Join a band, if you are not already in one.

i'm never in a rut when there's gigs coming, and it's obvious what to practice :)

+1

Also start delving into theory if you don't know it yet.

I used to just walk away from it...just like when cramming for a test, you can take in too much info, or just get stuck.
I've walked away for a few days or longer...take the time off though to do some paperwork...a.k.a sheet music. OR get online and read up on your theory.
2nd option is like you stated, try learning a new style...if your into metal...learn some old mo'town 70's funk. Start youtubing some bass solos and watch guys that are out of your norm.
It happens to us all..hell I'm 40 and still get in them. I just broke out all my theory books after putting them down 10 yrs ago :D
