Hi guys! My first post in this section of the forum ;)

A friend of mine is venturing himself into building Upright basses. He's just finished one built after an Azola Gypsy with pickups and a preamp He built himself too...

My question is; which pickups/preamp brand would fit better an upright like that? and which strings would you recommend me?

The bass is short scale, like a bass guitar... I was thinking just to play pizz but It'd be good to know which strings could be good for arco too;)

Try having a look through the dean pace thread, might find some suggestions in there.

Without any picture it's not easy to help you...
As for strings:
Will you want to bow them?
(that would exclude nylon covered ones)
As for the pickup:
With a piezo pickup, you will be able to use any type of string, even gut or other non-ferrous materials.
